I have noticed that some of you have GPS systems. How much have you found
that you actually use it? I found a unit on sale, but I don't think it is
strong enough to really be used. How much of a difference is there in the
ability of the different models to triangulate signals? How long does it
normally take for a typical unit to lock into the signals and start
tracking?

I have a bad leak in the left lower corner of my '86 stock 4X4 pickup. How
do you take out the trim out to get at the source of the leak? The auto
parts store suggest using silicone to plug the leak. Are there any other
product, preferable more 'fluid' than the thick silicone so that it can
just flow into the source of the leak ? Thanks for any help.

I have written to few on the list about backspacing. I have a
trailmaster 4" suspension lift with 15x10 ARE outlaws II with 33x12.5's
mounted. I have grown to hate my tires sticking out so far from the
wheel wells. I now know I can get 33x9.5's in the same tire I prefer.
So I wanted to get some 15x7's with stock backspacing and would know
that the tires would fit under the wheel wells, completely.
However, a few have said that it would not work because the stock
backspacing wouldn't work with the lift. It's been a few years since I
put the lift on and I had a buddy(who is a mechanic) help me. He had
lifted his toy a year earlier (that's how I got the idea). Anyway, I
had a memory flashback that when he lifted his truck with the same lift
(TM 4") he drove for quite a few months with his stock 15x7 factory SR5
rims with the stock 31x10.5's before he could afford to get 15x10 ARE's
and 33x12.5's. He had no problem with the lift and stock rims, that was
one reason we chose TM lift was it didn't change the stock suspension at
all it just lowered it and the differential.
So, my question is has anyone else out there used trailmaster lifts and
ran stock rims? I know he ran the stock rims but have gotten
conflicting information from people on the list. So now I am second
guessing my own knowledge. If they will work I would then be in the
market to get some factory SR5 rims. Thanks in advance. Reply to list

Subject: Factory Valve Clearances
Somebody on the Four Wheeler Toyota Bulletin Board has been claiming that
it is ok to adjust valves a little tight, "for less noise, more power,
better fuel efficiency".
Now, I know that this isn't right and that it can burn your valves.
He claims that Toyotas come from the factory with the valves set around
.007/.011 Intake/Exhaust. Comments?
Also, I pointed out that valves too tight won't fully seat in the head and
burn. Someone pointed out that if there is ANY clearance the valve is
fully seating. This kinda makes sense? I know the DURATION would be less
then. But someone else pointed out that aftermarket cams change the
duration anyways.
Basically, I'm afraid someone is spreading bad information and I'd like
some good ammo to stop them.
The URL for the four wheeler toyota bb is

Thanks, hopefully we can save someone from hurting their Toy.

I recall a story no long ago posted here with respect to a
*welded* tow hook being torn off and launched through
someone's window. What would happen if someone got hurt
by that projectile?
If person "A" is stuck and asks "B" for help and then the
axle gets torn off - "A" cant do much - he *asked* for help.
If person "A" is stuck and "B" comes over and starts helping
and the axle gets torn off - "A" can sue "B" and probably
WIN the case. This is because "A" didnt ask for assistance.
I DO NOT AGREE WITH THE ABOVE - I am merely stating that
I think that's how it would play out in court.
I think that "A" is an a%#h*&^ for suing to begin with,
but that does not change the belief that he would win.

I didn't realize that there was a significant strenght difference in the
frames. As to the solid axle conversion, I will stay away from the conversion
kit, unless it somehow magically drops to about $100 (how much is a kit
anyway?).
I have that Dana 44 laying around, and I will probably put it up front since
it is strong enough and already set up for crossover steering. It is from a
Wagoneer, so the bolt pattern already matches. I may end up doing it this
summer if I can find the time.

Same frined that was considering the deisel swap in his Toy ( I mentioned afew
days ago) is considering putting a 360, T18 and, model 20 Jeep stuff in his
Toy. If so, we were going to install a Jeep gas tank where the spare goes.
Then we would put in a Toy tank with an in tank pump. We were going to wire
the Toy tank to be switched to feed into the Jeep tank so you don't have to
deal with sending units & other switching kits. That would give 15 gal Jeep
tank, and a 15 gal. Toy tank. With a 360 he will probably need it!
I just hope that 360 will fit in there...

Since I have the Rancho Dual exhaust out one side, the exhaust is in the way.
I will have room when this exhaust goes and I replace it in the future.

I was thinking of putting a motor on the chain mechanism, but thought that
would get too complicated. I will prpbably just salvage a bar type tire
retainer & use a wing nut on that like you said. For storage, I was
considering PVC with capped & sealed ends, with axles, etc, in them. Stuff
you don't need except in emergencies. I was thinking about rust, but if you
pack & store them right, that should not be a problem.

Around here, no one knows how to drive in snow & ice. I have spent many hours
in parking lots giving cars little tugs just to get them unstick from the ice
that built up in fromt & back of their tires when it falls off the fenders. I
have NEVER taken money for helping people, (just my personal rule, no ill
feelings toward people who do charge).
Last year on the morning of my girlfriend's brother's wedding, I pulled
several people out of a ditch. One was a friend of my parent's, and used to
attend the same church as we did. He kept trying to give me money, and I
refused. About a month later, I get a card in the mail from their family with
$40 in it, saying it was for my birthday (sneaky timing) and that he had
traded the Honda in for a 4 wheel drive SUV.
By the way, stuck about 20 feet away from this guy was a 2WD Explorer that was
crammed into a ditch. As I winched him out, he was calling that thing
everything in the book!

The main thing is to check & see if there is a Good Samaritan law in YOUR
state. This will mean that they can sue, but they will not win.
Someone earlier suggested a sign on the truck saying free tows. I go one
better, and avoid any problems with the official type people:
"Nice, friendly, giving person is located in this truck!"
I wanna see a Judge say anything about that... (Of course, there will be
someone out there who will prosecute you for that one)

It seems the rubber gasket around the thermostat had

Im guessing that the square thing is a thermostat gasket.
Pop off the water neck and check the thermostat. You dont
have to drain the rad to do this, but you will spill the

The Jerry can is German whereas the NATO can is European :)
In all seriousness, the typical jerry can has a weld that goes
around the base of the can - like soup cans have.
The NATO can is welded as two halves. Think of it like a
suitcase.
In theory - the weld on a NATO can is supposed to have
less of a rust problem compared to the old "Jerry" cans.

1. All the time. I even have one hooked into my PowerBook, running

portable in-car navigation.
2. A huge difference. I shopped around for a long time, comparing the

could have gotten a 50% employee discount on the Trimble). The Garmin 12XL
was(is?) the best unit going last spring. It tracks up to 12 satellites,

Check out what it would cost to use a Chev Tranny and T-case. As I have seen
the Toy tranny wont hold up if you are going to use it at all. Drives fine
but as soon as you start to load it up it will break. Just my opinion,

I've pretty much got to second everything Eric said. My GPS is a
Motorola Traxxar, about 5 years old. The external power/antenna adapter
uses the same bolt pattern as Motorola cell phone hands-free kits, so
I've got the mounted in my 4-Runner on a gooseneck phone adapter. Since
the unit is pretty old, it's a multiplexing unit, whereas the newer
models (except for some of the really low-end models) are mostly
parallel receivers (which is what you want).
If you can afford it, get an external antenna. Reception may be okay
without one, but orientation of the unit will be important. With an
external antenna, you'll get superior reception and you can put the unit
just about anywhere. I recently mounted my antenna to the rear window
wiper clip and routed the antenna line into the body and behind the
right-side panelling for a semi-permanent installation.
Naturally I use the GPS while off-roading, but it also comes in handy on
the highway and even in town. On the highway I use if for speed and
distance to a known point, like where I know there's a gas station.
That way I can tell if I can make it to a certain point or if I need to
look for gas earlier. In town, I've used it to guide me to places that
I've never been but can get the lat/lon off the web or from the DeLorme
Street Atlas program. There's been a couple times when I've looked at a
map wrong or didn't remember the directions so well, and the GPS has
pulled through every time.
For more information on GPS technology in general, take a look at

Con-Fer makes a Jerry Can holder for swing away tire carriers. , But is
seems like a pretty sturdy bracket, and has provisions for padlocking
the can so it can't be removed or opened with the lock in place. I
think it was about $30 (without the Jerry Can).
The bracket was originally designed for the Pathfinder. On my '91
4-Runner the natural place for the bracket is right where the license
plate holder sits. So before I buy one, I'm going to have to figure out
some way to mount the bracket so it sits just over the license plate
holder.

if it's a project vehicle, go for it. i bought my 87 4runner with 186000 miles on
it, running rough, leaking oil, little tire thread left, etc. for $5200 (asking
price was $7500). a similar good 4 runner was about $8000~$10,000, so i bought
it for the same reason as you: just a project vehicle. and now i like it more
than my camry.
since yours has a salvage title and no miles, it'll be difficult to sell, but who cares,
you're starting low anyways. bargain as much as you can, tell them that the miles
are unknown and that the salvage title should be arround 50 cents per dollar. if it were
me, i'd offer $1000 and find a compromise in between.
good luck!!! let me know what happened.

rebuilding it little by little.
I found an 85 4Runner for sale that is a bit rough, and I am not sure what it's worth. It
has a Salvage title, but the body is pretty good (missing rear bumper, Wshield trim,
hacked grill, real cheap paint, no rust anywhere). The 5 speed Tranny & Xfer appear to be
out of an 87. The Cap is fair, with a 1" crack by the side window. The interior is
missing a few panels and is pretty tore up (different door panels, missing heater/AC
knobs, dirty seats front & back with screwed up controls, rear window & door inop, ign key
sticks). The title shows actual miles not known but over 117 miles. The rear end has a
diff ratio (4.1 ??) than the front gears (3.9 ??) and the rear end is noisy (L&R axels
locked together after a minute of spinning just the R tire in the air w/L tire on the
ground. Then it when back to normal open diif action. maybe a locker ??). Has factory
alloys with worn 31's. Springs are a bit mashed. The motor & tranny appear to run/shift
well, but there is a spe!
ed dependent thud coming from the tranny than does not change with gear selected or Xfer
case setting. No leaks Xcept Gear oil out of the right front knuckle. The frame looks
good (no welds/meas the same corner to corner). Asking price is $3000 I know I would
have to repair/regear the rear (locker while I am at it of coarse) and probably do the
front as well to allow 33's later on. The tranny may also need attention. This will not
be a daily driver, but a project truck to play with. What should I be wary of and how
much lower $$$ should I go for. Thanks for reading all the way thru, and reply to me
direct if possible (MG_Engineering@Compuserve.com) as I am in digest mode.

From: "Allen Jensen" I have noticed that some of you have GPS systems. How much have you
found that you actually use it? I found a unit on sale, but I don't think
it is strong enough to really be used. How much of a difference is there
in the ability of the different models to triangulate signals? How long
does it normally take for a typical unit to lock into the signals and
 start tracking?
i bought mine cause i thought it was just a really cool toy. now if i were
to be shot down in bosnia from my f-16, i'd be able to call in my position
for extraction. 8-))
these days, some of the 'cheaper' ones use a single channel that multiplexes
the satellite signals. i had a garmin 45xl that used this system and it took
forever sometimes to look into a stable signal, enough to get a 2D fix (2D
fix for speed and direction, 3D fix would give altitude, but altitudes tend
to be crappy...)
fortunately walmart had a great return policy and the new garmin 12xl with 12
channel parallel system came out. i got that and it locks two minutes when
cold and under a minute when warm. sometimes if i turn off then on in a
parking lot, it would lock in under 10 seconds...
basically, they all use the same algorithms for triangulations. after all,
trig is trig is trig... they all use the same 'birds' and the data
coming out is standard. some just use faster hardware. there's a model
selling in walmart right now for under $150 with 12 channels. not a garmin.
btw, i'm still waiting to use it in an emergency situation... but like any
'insurance,' i hope to never use it for that purpose.

I've got a Garmin 38 and I think its great. I find it more useful in the
truck then I do hiking around. It typically takes mine a few minutes to
lock on if its cold and I'm standing still. It takes longer if its cold
and moving. If its tracked something in the last hour or so, it will
lock on in a minute. Its an 8 channel older model. A friend of mine has
a 12xl that is mulitchannel. It will lock on cold in a minute. If its
been used in the last hour or so, a few seconds. Shop around and see
what you like. They are all about the same fundamentally. The software
and the buttons are going to be the big differences.

I don't think my 88 top had been off either, until 96 when I bought
it. I've had it off several times now, sometime for a week at a time.
It's a blast to drive with the top off!
There is no secret to reinstalling the top. I think the owners manual
may have a specific order for tightening the bolts...but I don't really
care what it is...it makes most sense to start at the top (where it
attaches to the roof of the cab).
I generally set the top in place, and put each bolt in, just a couple
turns (by hand) so I know everything is lined up...then I start
tightening them, starting at the roof area (cause I'd guess that would
be the place most likely to give you trouble if it didn't seal
correctly. Then I work my way to the back bolts, tightening as I go.
I've never found a drop of water in my vehicle due to the top not
sealing correctly. I found PLENTY of water in my truck after getting
suck in the Pismo Creek last weekend. :-) There's GOT to be a better
way to seal up that darn tailgate....anyone have a trick they use?
