INTRODUCTION:

After I swapped in my Jeep Wagoneer Dana 44 Front axle I needed to convert my rear axle bolt pattern to match the front. If your not familiar with Jeep Wagoneer's axles, the only wheel bolt pattern available were 6 on 5.5" basically the same as Toyota 6-luggers and GMC, Chevy 6-lug axles. Kind of out of the ordinary for Jeep since they could have just as easily made these axles 5 on 5.5" bolt pattern like the CJ's. We'll I debated on even bothering changing the rear bolt pattern to match the front but figured it would ease the complication later. Plus I'd have to keep two spares with me at all times. I'm sure you can imagine how ridiculous that would be considering my Project "Rockbuggy's" running 38.5" swampers now. Its hard enough finding room for one spare more less two. Anyways I searched and searched for a company that could convert my 8.8 axles 5 on 4.5" bolt pattern to a 6 on 5.5" bolt pattern and had no luck. The only adapters most places made were to change bolt patterns from the same lug pattern but with a larger bolt circle. for an example they could easily convert my 5 on 4.5" to a CJ 5 on 5.5" bolt pattern. But finally I located a place that can adapt any tire to any wheel pattern using hi-strength Aircraft aluminum. The place is called Custom Motorsports in Colton California. For $325.00 dollars a pair I could have any bolt pattern change I wanted. I went ahead and placed and order with Motorsports Technology and surprisingly they were ready the next afternoon. These adapters are custom made by order not kept in stock. Below are some pictures of the adapters just after picking them up.

TWO PIECE ADAPTERS Part 1:

In order for these adapters to make it possible to change a bolt pattern from 5 lug to 6 a two piece adapter has to be used. The first piece is designed for maximum strength and attaches to the axle. I had to cut the axle studs about .5" inch shorter after mounting the first piece of the adapter. This has to be done in order for the second piece of the adapter to be mounted. Not a big deal though, I just used my 4.5" cutting tool. NOTE: I used three washers and one open end lug nut to achieve identical stud lengths on each individual stud. Plus after cutting the stud, I backed the open end lug nut off so that it repairs the newly grinded stud ends. I highly recommend doing this when cutting any bolt. See pictures below of the first piece of the adapter mounted with the axle studs cut and ready for the second piece.
