2007 SCORE Class One Champ: Porter Race Cars

November 16, 2007 -- At the finish of the Baja 1000, Southern California-based Porter Race Cars claimed fifth place in a field of 29 Class One-Unlimited buggies, and took the 2007 SCORE Class One championship for themselves. Yup, they’re on Goodyears.

“Goodyear wants to be the first to congratulate Danny Porter and Billy Gasper on their Class One championship this year,” said Jack Cummings, Goodyear’s off-road race boss. “We knew Porter wanted it, and we know Goodyear’s desert tires are good enough to take the whole thing.”

At no point did the Goodyears on the Porter-Chevy V8 buggy give lead driver Gasper and company cause for doubt. “Tire durability was incredible. It’s like they were indestructible. The only big tire failure I had was when I hit a rock so hard it broke the wheel in half,” Gasper stated at the finish. The superiority of Goodyear’s off-road product in desert and race conditions has been a foundation of Porter Race Cars successes, and allowed their team to worry about racing, not their rubber.

Earlier in the season, Danny Porter warned the world they were coming. “We’re doing this. We don't talk about it and fluff. We plan to win -- it’s the only thing we expect when we back the buggy off the rig.” Their wicked Class One-Unlimited Porter-Chevy covered thousands of miles of the roughest terrain on Earth in 2007, and every one counted towards the SCORE championship they now hold.

Fifth-place in the 2007 Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 (beating 27 of 30 Trophy Trucks too) and an overall 18th out of 424 teams netted the season for Porter. It was a narrow victory, but not because of the Goodyears -- Porter and crew clinched the series by one point. 28.5 hours and nearly 1300 miles past the starting line, Billy Gasper and the Porter-Chevy crossed the finish line of the 40th Anniversary Baja 1000 with the Class One championship in their pocket.
