The Barrett Jackson auction is known for spotless musclecars, collector cars and one-off vehicles, but this year's auction featured several off-road racetrucks, giving a few lucky buyers the chance to own a piece of off-road racing history. Early in the week Larry Ragland’s Herzog-built 4WD Vortec GMC Envoy, which was the overall winner at the 2000 Pike’s Peak International Hill Climb, sold for $57,200. The vehicle was purchased by the Herzog family.

Sunday was the big day for off-road racing, as an ex-Ricky Johnson Chevrolet S-10 Mickey Thompson stadium series truck (above) and the revolutionary Brian-Kudella built Chevrolet S-10 driven by Larry Ragland fell under the gavel along with Ragland’s Herzog-built Pike's Peak Vortec S-10. Johnson’s stadium truck was the steal of the show, selling for just $13,200.

Ragland’s desert S-10 (above) elicited a small bidding war, eventuall selling for $30,800.

Ragland (above) was present for the auction, having come directly from the airport after returning from the Dakar Rally in Argentina. Ragland bid on and won his Vortec S-10 Pike's Peak ride for $15,400. The truck was missing its transmission, but Raglans said he plans to get the truck running and return to Pike’s Peak for another run at the checkers.

Ford Motor Company was also on hand throughout the week to showcase the new SVT Raptor pickup. The display included Raptor-bodied Traxxas Slash R/C cars with a demo track as well as the real Raptor. Baja 1000 Raptor race drivers Greg Foutz and Randy Merritt were on hand to give demo rides in a production Raptor on a short off-road course that featured whoops, rollers and a good sized jump. Ford also auctioned off the first production Raptor for charity. The truck sold for $143,000 with the proceeds going to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). The price included a ride in the third seat of the Race Raptor at a Best in the Desert race later this year.
