January Feature Vehicle

May. 06, 1997 By ORC STAFF

Gene owns many Scouts (I think all Scout owners have more than one). These trucks are built tough. It may not appear that Gene has modified much, mainly because the right stuff is already in place. The main problem Gene encountered with this Scout was neglect. Gene replaced or rebuilt most of the Scout himself with most hard to find parts coming from Jim & Carol at Anything Scout in Mt.View, CA.

Gene did all of the work and welding on his rig with the exception of a custom exhaust by Bob at Cal State Muffler in Milpitas, CA and setting up the gears which was done by Rear End Specialties in Santa Clara, CA. John and his crew at Rear End Specialties are very IHC friendly!

Due to the rugged nature of the Scout, Gene was able to focus on the details under the vehicle, such as steering, axles, brakes, and suspension. For protection of vital parts Gene made every attempt to keep everything above the frame rails, even the tailpipes. With nothing hanging down the Scout did not need very many skidplates (although a trans pan cover is in the works).

Gene is a member of the California Association of Four Wheel Drive Clubs and as the pictures show he isn't afraid to use his Scout. The above photos show Gene on the Rubicon. As you can see he usually drives in the ruts, not around. The photos below were taken at Hollister Hills. They are a little older and show the old bumpers and a low hanging fuel tank.

Here are some more photos of Gene on the Rubicon. The water picture is of Gene pretending to be a boat captain. Now they call him "Cap't Gene". His distributor got water in it and left him stalled in the middle of the water crossing with a line of Jeeps behind him.

Vehicle Specs...

  • Color: One of those different IH colors (Bronze or is it Root Beer?)
  • Engine: Bone stock 345 V8
  • Aspiration: 2B Holley (stock)
  • Exhaust: dual w/stock manifolds and DynaMax Mufflers
  • Transmission: TorqueFlight 727 Auto w/Derale Trans Pan Cooler
  • Transfer Case: Dana 20
  • Front Axle: Dana 44 open knuckle w/drilled vented rotors, welded tubes, custom fully welded truss, Earls braided lines, 1/8" front diff cover, and Warn Premium Hubs (w/studs)
  • Rear Axle: Dana 44 (30 spline) with the larger 11x2.75 drum brakes, Fully welded truss, 1/8" diff cover, and Earls braided line
  • Ring/Pinion: 4.09 w/Detroit Lockers front & rear
  • Crawl Ratio: Almost 25:1 (good thing I have enough torque)
  • Suspension: Hmmm... I use the stock main leaves but I did some parts swapping, I have add-a-leafs, I made my own shackles, I have a body lift, and I used a little voo doo.
The shocks have 10 inches of travel front and rear and I use all of it (they limit my travel and are bending the mounts!!), which is probably about 11 to 12 inches at the hubs. I need to move the mounts and get longer shocks (someday).
  • Shocks: Pro Comp ES3000
  • Tires/Rims: Radial RVT 33x12.50-15 MTs on 8 inch chrome steel wheels
  • Winch: Does a come-along count?
  • Other: Roll Bar, CB, SunPro Gauges, x-ammo boxes for storage, 60" High Lift Jack, 33 gallon HD fuel tank installed three inches higher in the frame for protection, Shovel, Hatchet, Water tight first aid kit, PermaCool HP 2200 cfm electric fan, custom angle iron reinforced draglink and c-channel reinforced center tie rod, tow hooks on both ends, Vents extended to engine compartment, and Custom rear bumper (recently installed but the front one never made it to the truck).

In The Works...

Just like everyone else Gene has several projects in the works. He has collected some new parts and pieces over the years and has decided to use them on a frame up rebuild on another '73 Scout he has instead of continuing to build the Scout you see here. So far Gene has collected:
  • 392 cid IH V8 4v spread bore (the block is at the machine shop as we speak)
  • 727 TorqueFlight Auto trans (rebuilt)
  • Twin Stick Dana 20 and 2.46:1 Bronco Gears (I just need to mate the two together)
  • 10,000 lbs MileMarker Winch (still in the box)
  • Full Cage (I might build a different one though)
  • more Dana 44's (I just don't know what gears I want to run?)
  • Rotors and calipers for rear disc brakes with e-brake (still need backing plates)
  • and of course all of the usual stuff... old a/c pump to convert to an air compressor, air tanks to mount, etc. etc...

Still Looking For...

Drop Gene an email if you can help him with any parts on his wish list for the "new" Scout. He would rather have a Scout version of the Dana 300, a fuel injection kit for the 392 (a Holley ProJection might make a nice swap), a 4 core radiator, an on-board welder (he's been using batteries up to now), Hot water/shower set-up, and on and on....
