Chances are, if you’ve seen a Toyota truck driving around town or on the highway, you’ve at some point seen the TRD sticker on the rear quarter panel of the truck bed. The Tacoma and Tundra are offered with upgraded TRD packages that include Sport and Off-Road, but in 2015 Toyota took its TRD offerings to the next level with the TRD Pro.
The Ram Rebel was introduced in 2015 to provide “next level” off-road performance for additional chops in the dirt compared to the standard 1500 4×4 truck. Although we’ll be seeing a new Ford Raptor in 2017, for this year only Ram and Tundra offer next-level off-road truck packages in the half-ton market, and so this shootout pits Ram’s Rebel versus Toyota’s Tundra TRD Pro.
Ram Truck today announced it will support Arizona businesswomen Nena Barlow of Barlow Adventures and Kande Jacobsen of Adventure Driven in this inaugural Rebelle Rally later this year. Ram Trucks will provide a 2016 Ram Rebel truck for the two women to drive in the Rebelle Rally, which is an all-female navigation and four-wheel-drive event crossing portions of the southwestern United States this October.
Back in 1964, a small group of Jeepers got the idea of creating a fundraising event for the newly formed California Association of 4WD Clubs (CA4WDC). It would need to be a first-rate event similar to the then-famous Jeepers Jamboree on the Rubicon. Sacramento Jeepers member Ed Dunkley, an encyclopedia of knowledge on Sierra Nevada history and old mining routes, gathered a few folks and began searching for a suitable trail. The chosen route was a long-abandoned wagon road from Cisco Grove, California (near Truckee), to the shores of Meadow Lake and the 1860’s mining camp of Summit City. It had been decades since the “road” had been used, and Mother Nature had played her hand at reclaiming the land.
Do you yearn to feel your truck lunge forward under moderate throttle, the hood heaving up before you? Do you ache for that gentle linear pre-runner sway into every corner? Does your current rig sport a sticker with Calvin maliciously relieving himself on a Blue Oval? If so, Dealer Services International’s Tundra Pro Runner may be the truck for you.
The Raptor is said to have no real peers. And while that is strictly true, this Toyota makes a compelling argument to look hither. But it’s not the truck’s canyon-absorbing wheel travel, miraculous hydraulic bump stops, or bad-ass 18-inch black aluminum wheels in 35-inch rubber that make this Tundra exceptional. What makes this a viable Raptor alternative is that you can buy one right off a Toyota showroom floor today. No lapse in warranty coverage, no payload penalty, and no need to max out your credit card for the modifications.
