Bryce-Menzies-TORC-BFGoodrich-8-14-13Drivers on BFGoodrich Tires continued their successful run in the Traxxas TORC Series Presented by AMSOIL at the Red Bud MX track on Aug 10-11. A podium sweep of the Pro 4 class in Round 12 on Sunday served as a tremendous finale in what was a big weekend for the tire manufacturer which claimed five wins and 13 total podium finishes in the pro classes and won 10 of the 12 the sportsman class races as well.

Red Bud has notoriously technical and natural terrain to maneuver through which can and did prove to attract aggressive racing. Team BFGoodrich member Bryce Menzies swept the Pro 2 class both days while Rob MacCachren captured two podium spots in Pro 2 on the weekend.

Thumb-Robby-Win-SCORE-Baja-500-6-2-13Robby Gordon followed up his first-place qualifying effort on Thursday with a victory yesterday, as he pulled away from the Trophy Truck field to earn his second win in the Trophy Truck class at the 2013 SCORE Baja 500.

“It was a good day. The guys did a great job prepping the car – it ran all day long,” Gordon said. “The pit stops were awesome, awesome pit stops.”

Gordon’s efforts were nearly derailed just after the start of the race, however, as an area in the wash flooded by a broken water main the night before almost took the #77 Speed Energy Chevy out.

After roughly eight hours of racing, the lead Trophy Trucks are at about race mile 500. BJ Baldwin is currently in the lead, with Bryce Menzies, Gustavo Vildosola, Rob MacCachren and Dan McMillin trailing him, respectively.

The AGM Trophy Truck team is about 40 miles off the pace as physically the 11th Trophy Truck – a pretty good start considering we were told they had two flats at the start of the race and came off the line 31st.  We’re waiting at San Ignacio at race mile 615, as Martin Christensen will take over for Armin Schwarz in the #15 TT and race the final 500-or-so miles to the finish.

With whispers and rumors growing for a few weeks now that Off-Road driver Bryce Menzies will be attending X-Games 2012 LA, we can now confirm that the 2011 SCORE Trophy Truck and TORC Pro2 Champion will be taking on a new realm of Motorsports. Bryce has been invited by fellow Red Bull Athlete, Travis Pastrana to compete in the RallyCross portion of the 2012 X-Games, which takes place in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles.

Bryce will find himself behind the wheel of a Dodge Dart, which is new to the RallyCross competition. The European production based all wheel drive vehicle will produce 600hp, 60lbs of boost and can go from 0-60 in just 2 seconds, similar to F1 car speeds. The Dodge Dart is one of the favored cars for this year’s competition and is expected to produce quality results.

RallyCross debuted in X-Games for the first time in 2010 and is a combination of circuit racing, off-road racing and rally competition. Rally Car racing takes place on public or private roads from point to point which is similar to racing Baja off-road races, where as RallyCross has as many as 10 drivers racing through a challenging short course which features jumps, unbanked turns and ever changing track conditions, in the same sense that off-road short course racing does. RallyCross is the off-road short course racing of the ever-growing sport of Rally in high-horsepower compact cars.

BJ Baldwin set out to dominate at the Baja 500 in Ensenada, Mexico. He spent days prerunning the course to learn every bump and turn as well as humanly possible to give him an edge on race day. The effort paid off when he was forced to make his wounded truck live for almost the entire race. At just mile 90 of a 450 mile race his transmission began slipping in third gear. BJ was faced with a choice; stop to change the transmission at the next pit which would have took 50 minutes and get passed by the entire field of Trophy Truck drivers, or back it down and roll the dice. See if he could at least finish in the top twelve so he would be included in the drawing for starting positions at the Baja 1000. He found that the first two gears were working fine; it was only top gear that was giving him trouble. With the crew willing and able to make the swap the tough choice was made to continue the race at a slower less competitive pace.

That’s where the hours spent prerunning came in handy. BJ had to carry his momentum, he could not rely on quick acceleration to pull him through the corners and reaching the trucks top speed of 140mph was impossible. He had run most of the high speed sections three times before raceday. The information he amassed and the familiarity with the course that he gained allowed him to confidently go through every corner at the highest speed possible. He quickly fell into a rhythm as he swept through each corner and before he knew it, found himself out front with a twelve minute lead. The gamble paid off better than anyone had thought but with miles to go several drivers were running strong and would use the more technical sections heading into the finish to close the gap.

As a little kick-off to the start of the short-course off-road racing season beginning this weekend in Arizona for the Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series, check out this pairing of All Star pitcher Tim Lincecum as he gets behind the wheel of Bryce Menzies’ trophy truck.

While in Phoenix for spring training, baseball world champion and All Star pitcher Tim Lincecum took the opportunity to meet up with 2011 TORC Series PRO 2 class champion, SCORE Trophy Truck champion and Dirt Sports Driver of the Year, Bryce Menzies, at Firebird Raceway.

While out practicing for the upcoming short-course off-road season, Menzies and Lincecum were able to meet up just prior to the start of the short-course season and baseball season. After suiting up, Lincecum went for a wild ride in Menzies’ 800-horsepower #1 Menzies/Red Bull Trophy Truck. After the tutorial with Menzies, Lincecum climbed into the driver’s seat, where he proved that throwing a baseball isn’t his only talent.

ENSENADA, Mexico (June 1, 2011) –  Desert racing teams look to put BFGoodrich Tires and its portfolio of desert-conquering tires to the test again at this year’s 43rd Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 500 in Ensenada, Mexico, starting Saturday, June 4. Armed with a team of all-star drivers, BFGoodrich Tires is looking to further establish its legacy of winning performances by capturing its 28th win in 31 years of racing at the 2011 Tecate SCORE Baja 500.

The Tough Course Ahead
The 2011 Tecate SCORE Baja 500 will host nearly 250 entries in 28 Pro and seven Sportsman classes. The rugged 452.84-mile course is similar to last year’s course, although it is 14 miles longer due to terrain changes from natural weather patterns.

“The course is shaping up to be as rugged as ever, and we’re looking forward to putting our tires to the test once again in one of the toughest racing environments imaginable,” said Silvia Mammone, BFGoodrich Tires motorsports and sponsorship manager. “This year has been good for BFGoodrich Tires in SCORE competition thus far, but now it’s time to repeat victory, both at the Baja 500 in June and the 1000 in November.”

The BFGoodrich Tires Arsenal of Drivers
Andy McMillin, Bryce Menzies, Rob MacCachren and Jesse Jones are some of the BFGoodrich Tires drivers to watch for at the Tecate SCORE Baja 500. Each has been tremendously successful in 2011 racing in the desert on BFGoodrich® Baja T/A®KR tires.

McMillin, the reigning Tecate SCORE Baja 500 champion, will start the race in second position behind pole-sitter Menzies, who won the 2011 SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge and placed sixth in class at the 2011 SCORE San Felipe 250. McMillin is looking to add to his list of Baja accomplishments by capturing his sixth overall victory south of the border. McMillin has already reached the podium in 2011, with a third place overall finish at the SCORE San Felipe 250.

“I am excited about this year’s SCORE Baja 500,” said 2010 Tecate SCORE Baja 500 winner McMillin. “We have worked hard all season for this race, and this year’s course is very similar to the one we won on last year. Racing on BFGoodrich tires provides me with the confidence to push as hard as we need to at any given time. We had no flats during last year’s race, proving that BFGoodrich Tires is by far the leader in desert-racing tire durability and performance.”

MacCachren, a veteran off-road racer fresh off his 2011 SCORE San Felipe 250 overall victory, will have to fight his way through the dust of the nine trophy trucks starting in front of him. Jones, who drew the 12th spot, was the 2010 SCORE overall champion and placed second overall at the 2011 SCORE San Felipe 250, less than one minute behind MacCachren.

With the Tecate SCORE Baja 500, BFGoodrich Tires will be looking to secure a third consecutive victory in the 2011 SCORE International Racing Series season, after wins earlier this year at the SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge and the SCORE San Felipe 250. In 2010, BFGoodrich Tires and its all-star team of drivers conquered the desert-racing series by capturing a first place finish at each of the five SCORE desert races.

Desert-Conquering Tires and Support
Each year, BFGoodrich teams compete on a variety of tires, including the BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/AKO tire, BFGoodrich Baja T/A tire and BFGoodrich Baja T/AKR tire. BFGoodrich Tires also supports the entire Baja Challenge (BC) Class at the Tecate SCORE Baja 500 with
BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/AKM2 tires.

In addition to supplying tires to a number of Tecate SCORE Baja 500 competitors, BFGoodrich Tires will continue to lend pit and communications support to teams through its fleet of off-road motorsports vehicles. This immense undertaking involves more than 250 off-road enthusiasts and volunteers who donate their time in order to help make the race an overwhelming success.
