This is a picture of my 1987 FJ60 in
action on my first real trail ride at the 97' Catamount Cruiser
Challenge in New Hampshire. I'm told I got air under 3 tires on
this run through the mud pit--BANZAI! [By the way, the
CCC was a great event with fantastic trail leaders that were very
helpful to a beginning off-roader--I can't wait to come back next
year with bigger tires! This event is great for anyone on the
East Coast looking for a 1st trail ride]. It was great to see
the Order of the Elongated Cruiser out in such force. Now
that I've popped the "Big Red Cherry" as Tyke or Junior (the
fantastic trail guides on my 1st run) called my rig, I can't wait
till my next wheeling event. I saw some
fantastic wagons at the CCC [such as Henry's, Dave's, Shelly &
Rob's, and Ohio's] and have compiled the following list of mods for
1998: OME heavy suspension (heavy duty shocks & springs],
33" x 12.5" BFG Mud Terrains on new steel spoke rims, ARB front
bumper/brush guard, rear [ARB? Custom?] bumper with swing away tire
carrier that is supported entirely by bumper [no attachments to
body sheet metal]. --Jason Koeferl, Albany, NY 87' FJ60 78' FJ55

Hi! I'm Bob Gibbons and this is
my 1988 FJ62. It is my daily driver, although not for long. I am
soon graduating from Kansas State University (right in the middle
of the U.S.); and I plan to purchase another vehicle for a daily
driver. You know what that means! Right now the Cruiser has Old Man
Emu light springs in front, medium in rear with Heckethorn Hydro
shocks. The wheels are wrapped in Michelin LTX A/T 31X10.5 tires. I
talk on a Uniden 40 channel CB with K40 antenna, and listen
to a Kenwood 4007 CD player. I take my black Labrador Retriever
Camie with me four wheeling and hunting for company when my wife,
Amy, won't come. Often I wheel with my buddy Bruce and his 1988
Grand Wagoneer. |
Hi Darren's the name, I live in
Melbourne, Australia. My vehicle is a 1981 Toyota Landcruiser BJ42
, it is powered by a 3.4l deisel engine. Factory options include,
air conditioning and front wheel discs but misses out on power
steering. I bought it in May '96 from a local car yard. My family
has named it "the truck'. I have added a few accesseries wich
include, TJM alloy roof rack that has being powdercoated black, a
home made cargo barrier,a drawer system and centre console made
from 12mm ply & carpeted, rear shovel and axe holder, Hella
driving lights, cb radios housed in a over hed console and bucket
seats from a Hyundai Excel. I mainly take my truck up into the
Victorian High country. --Darren Edwards |
Here are my two cruisers. They live with me in Ft.
Collins, CO. I've had Jethro (1968 FJ-40) for about 3 months. The
previous owner added the lift kit, large tires and Volvo bucket
seats. Jethro is presently my daily driver and my offroad toy. I've
repaired the rust in the tailgate and rebuilt the carburetor. I
bought the old one about 3 weeks ago at a garage sale for $300. He
is my project cruiser. He is a 1965 FJ-40 completely stock with 37K
miles. I have removed the basket on the back and as soon as I get
him running, he will be my daily driver. --Bruce

This is my '78 baby...(FJ 40 of
course!). I bought it in the fall of '95 with a mere 67K on
it. I am second owner, and it has never been offroad...I
mean, never had been offroad. I bought it nearly stock,
and added the 31X11.5 Mickey Thompson's and the wheels shown.
I also added MSD ignition module (which I found to be a waste of
money). Future plans include rust removal, 38mm Weber carb,
valve job, head shaved, and a much needed shackle reversal
lift. --Michael Weller, Raleigh NC |
This is the Sand Spider aptly named by my friend Didi while on
a Death Valley wheeling adventure. It is a '76 FJ55 convertible,
spring over with custom built rancho leaves, 12" lift total with
35" yokohama superdigger IV's on 12" rims. The engine/drivetrain is
stock. Interior has a custom made rollcage and a stereo system with
12 speakers and 790 watts as well as a Cobra CB radio. This picture
was taken at Burning Man '97 in the Black Rock desert in Northern
Nevada. The trailer is a 1965 Landcruiser FJ20 (FJ40 cut in half).
It sports a 25 gal. Extra fuel tank 35" Mud TA's and various other
goodies like a 45 gallon cooler full of beer for those way out
trips to the desert. The week before this trip I took her through
the Rubicon trail without the trailer. Please pay homage as she was
hit by a semi truck last week and totalled. I'm putting this pic up
in honor...sorry Didi --lukanius |
I live in Melbourne, Australia. The
photo shows my Cruiser during an off-road event organised to raise
money for disadvantaged children. My Toyota 80 Series Landcruiser
has been fitted with 13"x33" TSL Super Swampers for off road use.
It has Old Man Emu (OME) shockers and springs which gave it about
50mm lift. It has a TJM alloy bar and Warn 9000lb winch fitted. The
spot lights are IPF super rallys (170 watt each!!!). Under the
bonnet, the engine is standard. I have an ARB air compressor fitted
with an outlet mounted on the bull bar. I have installed a Pirahna
dual battery system. Inside is pretty standard, except for the
sound system upgrade which includes four Polk speakers and a Kicker
subwoofer in the back. Great for those long trips in the outback. I
also have a Garmin GPS, and two CBs (UHF and AM). The Cruiser has
been across the Simpson Desert, into the Victorian high country and
all over the beaches in Robe, South Australia (among many other
places). --George Tsoukas, Melbourne,

My truck is a 1973 Toyota Land Cruiser
FJ40. In it's two ventures into Baja it has served me well. The
only improvement it had received when i got it was an auxiliary
fuel tank. So before the first Baja trip I got a set of BFGoodrich
radial all-terrain t/a tires. 235/75 R15, roughly the stock size.
And a pair of 150W KC's, because i like driving at night with my
sunglasses on. New exhaust system, alternator, starter, battery,
distributor, rebuilt the carb., rebuilt the break master cylinder
and replaced a few wheel cylinders, etc. We had NO problems on the
second trip. I mounted a 8000lb ramsey winch, a pair of 100W
lights(500W total!), a set of rancho RS5000 shocks and i replaced
the non-functioning air pump with a second alternator to handle the
new power demands. I see new leaf spring bushings and possibly
heavy duty shackles in the near future. --Paul

Hi. My name is Rod Diery and I live in Kulin, Western
Australia. This is my 1965 FJ40 which I race off road in Class 8
(Modified Four Wheel Drive) in Confederation of Australian
Motorsports (CAMS) competition here in WA. The Cruiser is powered
by a 350 Chev with Edelbrock Performer manifold, Holley 600, Genie
extractors (headers) and Allison electronic ignition. It drives
through a Turbo 400 and an almost stock early FJ40 transfer case.
Axles are stock 4.11 with a LSD in the rear. Brakes are 75 series
ventilated discs up front and solid Hilux discs in the rear. Custom
built leaf springs and twin Old Man Emu shocks on each corner keep
the Armstrong XT 31" tyres on the ground (sometimes). Custom radius
rods on the rear axle stops axle tramp and wind up under power. Top
speed recorded (on a police radar gun) is 173 kph or 108 mph.
That's a little scary in a SWB especially over the farm tracks we
race on. The vehicle is very competitive in Off Road Racing in WA
and it's best result was a third outright against some very tough
buggies. --Rod Diery |
Hello, This is my BJ-40 1980. I have
found it in a lost town of Finland, Kuru. The guy had it modified
in order to carry 8 very nice Siberian Husky up north where a
cruiser is really needed. The next upgrade should be bigger tire,
remove rear coil spring. The reason the guy sold this one is simply
because he already have a BJ42. I am born in Canada and I want to
see the cruiser all around the world !This is my 5th vehicle, I had
Tercel ;-P, FJ40 1965 (putted back on road in 1976), FJ40 1978
(without axle), Scout II 1980 (V8 345, Spicer Autom), BJ40 1980
(now). I wish to have an HJ-45 and believe me Ill find the
way to get it even if I have to go in Australia. Philippe

My family and our Land Cruiser live in
Anchorage, Alaska. So far it has played the role of a mud racer,
tuff truck racer, family camping wagon, recreational off roader,
hunting rig, and daily driver. It's taken six years to transform it
from a hub cap clad stocker to what you see here. I've done allot
of modifications it now has a Chevy 350 with most of the usual
mods,2" exhaust, Dynomax mufflers, the stock 4spd/t-case,
Lock-Right in the rear, 3.5" Rugged Trail suspension, power
steering, tilt wheel, 38.5x15.5 Ground Hawgs on American Racing
wheels, Warn 8274, rollcage, ustom guages, c-b, Prelude SI buckets,
Silverado Blazer back seat (for the 3 kids), factory 1 piece
tailgate, flat fenders, soft top, hard top, bikini top, half doors,
and too many little things to list. --Ed Ackerman
1975 FJ40 nicknamed "Lucy" she's a hard worker
through out the summer. Five months out of the year Lucy is hauling
mountain bikes, whitewater rafts, photo equipment along with camp
gear and other things. Working along side a fleet of buses in
Ashcroft, British Columbia, Canada. With 102 miles on her
speedometer, in early september of 1997 Lucy started to get serious
blow by. This winter she'll get a fresh motor, and body work where
I backed the bus into her. "Sorry again gal." Lucy is stock,
with the exception of the usual goodies like a CB, sound system,
two-way radio, bike racks, Jackall, shovel, axe, fire extinguisher,
tools, recovery kit (shackles, ropes, snatch blocks, gloves
etc...). Along with two quick releases from mountain bike
seat posts, which are used to replace the bolts on the side mirror
brackets, for easy adjustment. LUCY is STOCK and LOVIN
it.
My 1976 FJ40 bone stock, except for the 32"
tires and LINE-X bed sprayed. The picture here was taken when we
were crossing a river in Orlando, Florida. I also own a 97 Jeep TJ
but my true love is this FJ40. I am planning to put LockRite
lockers in, spring-over, and 35" boggers.

Here's my '88 FJ-62 on it's maiden
voyage after major modifications. I saved my pennies and
bought the Old Man Emu suspension (light springs, firm shocks), ARB
Bull Bar, and 33x9.50 BFG AT's. My buddy Joe was borrowing my
33" Buckshots, but that didn't slow us down a bit. (A set of
34x9.50 Super Swampers are on order.) Besides the suspension,
Bull Bar and tires, I've installed an "Eagle View" GPS, K&N air
filter, Hella 500 rounds, C.B. radio, and a 150 Watt amp for the
factory head unit (Alpine speakers up front, Polk's in the rear,
stock locations.) I'm looking into boosting the output of the
stock 3F-EFI with a "Jett Chip" made for the 91-92 FJ-80 with the
same engine/tranny. After 162,000 miles, the compression is
still 150 to 160 on all cylinders, so I think she'll handle the
extra horses. --Curtis N. Taft, MOLC &

Hi. This is my most prized possession
(a '78 FJ40) that is under constant evolution from the $2000
stocker I bought 12 months ago ( a real steal!!). I live in
Canberra, Australia, which can get mighty cold in winter (so I keep
the top handy for those chilly months) but come summer time..it's
cruise time! Mods to my truck include roll bars, 2" lifted OME
springs and shocks, Hancook 31 x 11.5 mud terrain tires, custom
console and rear seat. Currently it's in the garage getting a
respray ( Canary Yellow and Black) and a 2" body lift. Other mods
(not shown) include custom bull bar, spotlights, brush bars and
rear step. Canberra is a great place for four wheel driving... come
visit some time. --Michael Daniel |

Here it is, my new '69 Land Cruiser, I just picked it up from
my Best Friend ( He proved it once again by allowing me to buy this
at a pittance sum). It has been doing some rock climbing for the
past 8 years in Las Vegas and now has come to Uvalde, Texas, USA (
Where I drove the Cruiser 900 of the 1350 miles) to
experience the rivers, mud and hill country. It has the original F
engine (that I have promised not to change) that does quite well
here, I have already pulled two J**Ps out of the river and paraded
one of them down main street at the end of my tow strap. It was
almost perfect when I picked it up, but since it did so well at the
River, I awarded it Leather seats out of a Toyota Celica. Plans
include a center console mount CD-player, VHF/UHF Ham radio,
CB, Massive 10000 pound pull winch off another Land Cruiser and a
nice maroon paint job and not to worry, I am willing to get the
paint scratched. Drop me a line if your in the area. --Rick

Hey isn't it time I updated my
own bio! My 1985 BJ70 now sports an OME lift, and 33"
BFG AT's on stock Toyota rims. The OME's are really
smooth....I recently installed a Garmin GPSII+ so I can always find
my way back to the pub. Here is a shot in Moab Utah, normally
I cruise the coastal mountains with the Coastal Cruisers Club in
Vancouver, BC Canada. --Ian Staines |
This is the newly redone 78 FJ40, I
dropped her of at the body shop 9/3/96 and got it back 6/5/97.
While she was in the shop we dropped in the OME suspension and had
the carburetor re-built. She has the original 2F with 40,632 miles.
I just popped the top and installed an Aqualu tailgate with locking
compartment and Bestop bikini Now I'm ready for those corn
fields in Iowa! --Greg Overton |
This our 78FJ40 with my wife Loretta
at the "helm", We bought it after owning a restored 1969 FJ40. Our
intention was to completely restore this one from the ground up, So
We dismantled it 3 years ago and it has just begun to take form
once again. I have taken extensive photos of the restoration
process with the hopes of putting together a book or a Web site on
how We did it. We currently live in Vancouver B.C. and We do not as
of yet belong any club, but we have the desire to make it to Jim
Patterson Toyota's "Land Cruiser Days" with it in 2 years.

I am
including a photo of my pickup with the military style canvas cover
I made for the rear. I used a setup pretty similar to the factory
canvas except it is even with the top level of the cab (So I can
pull it in the garage). I used Military canvas and a rope down
method that is popular with Military vehicles in
Europe. The canvas sucks down tight when I am on the road and
does not flap around at all..... The canvas guy I used to sew it up
did it in about 6 hours just working from my ideas when I was
there... After he was done I paid him about $75.00 more than he
originally told me ($300.00) because I was so happy with how it
came out. I asked him if I should send any of my friends over
and he said "NO WAY, Never again!" The Mil canvas is pretty thick
and difficult to work with. --Steve |
Tampa, Florida here! This is my
'74 FJ40! Love it to death! I got it stuck last 4th of July,
got mad and added: Holley 350, Headers, Custom 3" pipe muffler
system w/flow master, front add-a-leaf (1 set), Custom made 5" lift
natural curved leaf springs in the rear and last 35x15x50 super
swampers! This machine is and looks tough! I don't put the
hard top on it cause of living in florida but I do have
it! I'd also love to start a Cruiser Club right here in
Tampa! Will send the new pic of the "Mo~chine" as soon as I
get it scanned! --Tracy Crisp |
This is my mildly modified late Model
FJ-40. The powerplant is a rare stock F-2E (electric) engine
which is fully rechargeable to meet current EPA requirements.
It is fitted with an oversized front bumper, custom dash with
dedicated single channel radio communications and grab
handle. It is a rare two-wheel drive model and do to little
or no articulation, a locker is desperately needed. The
lightweight polymer based wheels are fitted with 4 inch
tires. Other features include full roll bar, custom paint and
fender flares, and firestick CB antenna. (FJ-40 enthusists need to
check out the RC and Powerwheels sections of their local Toys R'
US). --Garrett Topham |
Portugal How are you? This is my "new"
BJ73.1986. Bought it half a year ago, because after driving my BJ46
(remember?) for 8 years, open or with a soft top I wanted some more
comfort. In 10 days I will head for Morocco again, this time in
this lovely machine! I did some minor repairs and maintenance
forgotten by the former owners and threw out the old sagging
suspension. I put on Old Man Emu (=OME?) and my favorite tires (for
a 3B engine) General 235/85R16 M/T Of course on the original
factory split-rim wheels. I'm really impressed and very pleased
with the suspension now and would like to ask you or anyone else
out there who has tried it on a type40 BJ40, FJ or HJ, how it works
for them. My wife's BJ40´s suspension is still stock and
shit. The engine has 280.000km. and lacks power to my taste
so that will be my next point of attention. Any suggestions? I'm a
diesel nut so it will be improving what I have or a swap for an
H On board I have 4 speaker stereo CB and GPS. --Frank

This is my 1973 FJ55, sitting in
Cheyenne, Wyoming, USA, where it spends all of it's time, thanks to
front and rear F seals blowing out. When I bought it, it was a hunk
of junk, and, to a lesser extent, still a hunk of junk, but I love
it. It's got a Motorcraft carb, leaky exhaust, non-running F, three
speed & transfer, leaking axles, and the MASSIVE front bumper .
I'll get it running again one of these days. --Brian

was the first vehicle I ever owned and it is still working
hard. I have made some modifications over the years. I
now have a Chevy 350 for a powerplant and a Turbo 400 tranny.
I also installed a Holley carb, Performer Intake, Flowmaster
mufflers, BFG Mud-Terrains, Rancho Suspension and HAM Radio gear
with 300 watts output. The paint is Desert Storm Anti-Laser
reflective. I currently live on Kodiak Island, Alaska.
If your ever on the island look me up. |
This is Mike Graham's 1981 BJ42, the
"Chew Toy". It's largely stock, including factory
intermittent steering, and extensive rust options, as well as the
desirable Rust-o-vent system. A rig like this makes
*every* drive an off-road adventure, as you get splashed even with
the windows rolled up. 8-) Soon to be off the
road for bodywork and an exorcism of the electrical system, she's
as willing as a new day (once you get the bitch running with only
two glow plugs working). The front light bar was installed to
keep the front bumper clear; I actually *use* my bumper, so I can't
have lights and jacks and all manner of other goodies strapped to
it. I don't want to wreck my Jackall when I'm mowing down
trees. The aforementioned bar has a mount for a big D-clevis
which acts as my forward tow-hook; it's more omnidirectional than a
pair of regular hooks. This picture shows the Chew Toy stretching
her tires in the back 40. She skids logs, pulls stumps, and
basically performs the functions of a street-legal tractor.
