The torque converter actually broke during the race, with the parts then breaking up and breaking the seal that lost the truck’s oil pressure. The transmission had to be removed to replace it, but the team had to get the truck first. Once that was replaced, the truck then unfortunately got stuck in a silt bed and lost more time. Christensen didn’t take over the vehicle at the driver change until Friday morning.

“At 8:30 this morning I left San Ignacio, which was about the time that we were supposed to be finishing the race,” he said. “So definitely way way behind and we were at the halfway point.

“My run was really nice. We were passing a lot of cars obviously with all the classes that had gotten by, and we just really took out time. You don’t want to ruin someone’s race just because we had a bad day.”

Although it wasn’t the result the team was looking for, surviving Baja is an accomplishment in its own right.

“At the end of the day, it’s a crazy crazy game, anything can happen. I’m just happy to finish. It’s a huge accomplishment just to do that in my book.”
