I just saw
a movie about unionizing players in the NHL. The players had no
control or representation until they organized themselves into a
power block.
If the motocross/arena cross/supercross/freestyle riders would
organize themselves into a barganing organization everything
would change and we might have the best of all worlds. We have
already seen this to a degree with McGrath, LaRocco and Emig
organizing their own teams. These riders have done well for
themselves but have yet to organize all riders into a power
block. Should this happen, everything would change and possibly
for the better.
Supercross is doing very well and I always go to round one at
Edison Field. Motocross, the nationals, on the other hand, from
a marketing perspective, is a big disappointment in comparison
even though I go to Glen Helen each year. The dusty dirty and
poor facilities makes the outdoors a poor choice for family
involvement at least in San Bernadino and Sacramento. If
standing all day in 100 degree heat and only being able to see
only a portion of the race is your idea of a good time, then the
nationals is the place to be. I think the nationals could be
much more.
I have gone to supercross races with family groups of as many as
300 people who have driven 250 miles to make a weekend out of
it. When motocross comes around, I have only been able to get a
group together of six guys and we only come for the day. If
motocross could be presented like NASCAR in a similar facility,
I could get the 300 people to go.
I know there will be many people who would like motocross to
stay the way it is but I would like to see it progress to a more
family friendly format. It would also mean a much greater amount
of money for the sport and the riders.
