Thank you for your great coverage of hillclimbing. I miss the great coverage on TV from the widowmaker days in Utah. Please do some more interviews and tell us where hillclimbers get their equipment I see in your article.
Jordy Smith

At the time, I was knee-high to a foot peg, but I remember the days. That's what put the fire under our feet to bring it back. Mark Kariya wrote an excellent article but isn't always out in that neck of the woods to consistently cover the hillclimbs. If you know of anyone who can, drop us a line.

You should put CR 100's in the internet so that the Parents of young kids can by it for their kids. Brenan Jones

I assume you're referring to the Honda XR 100, since Honda does not make a CR 100. The XR is an excellent bike for kids who are at the beginner level and parents who prefer to see the kids riding rather than wrenching. Check out the link above for Honda's full line of 2002 dirt bikes.

Elsinore Grand Prix

I would like to know when the Elsinore Grand Prix will be held this year as well as where, how and how much to enter. Any information you might be able to provide or who I need to contact would be greatly appreciated!

Thank You,
Eli Knight

The Elsinore Grand Prix takes place on November 10 and 11. Unfortunately for us here at ORC, the GP is held the same weekend as the Baja 1000. But nevertheless, we'll have staffers on site and reporting on the race. Look for coverage in our December issue. The contact info is listed below.

First Timer

i live in the sacramento area and i wanted to rent a dirt bike for a day. do
you know of any place like that. mabey a place that would show you how to use
it, i have never ridden one. Stevoh

I'd suggest picking up an old XR250, a helmet, gloves and boots and learn for basics on your own. There don't seem to be many dirt bike riding classes for beginners. But, there is one listed below, which may be of some help.

As for the XRs, they are plentiful on the west coast, run forever and are pretty darn cheap. Contact Al Baker's XRs Only if and when you do decide to get one. They're the XR gurus. Other than that, check out one of the riding schools listed below.

We contacted Emilio Bole in Castaic, California (20 minutes North of Los Angeles) who runs a Dirt Bike and ATV school. They have classes for the Beginner to the Advanced rider six years and older. The one day course follows the guidelines of the Motorcycle Safety Foundation curriculum.

Dirt Biker From Afar

Hello. I am Abdollah Mehran . I am 27 year old . I came to the United States of America 7 months ago to studying and living . When I was 10 year old , I started to ride a 50cc Italian moped in my country . Before I came to your country , I had many kind of motorcycles , like motocross YAMAHA YZ 125cc and YZ 250cc , offroadbike HONDA XL 250cc and XR 500cc , sportbike HONDA CBR 750cc and etc.... but always my favorite was ride a motocross and offroadbikes . I have 17 years experience of riding in roads , mountains , hills , forests and deserts . Do you know ? How can I show my ability in riding to the American sponsers ? Is there any place to test and select the good riders ? How can I join to motocross or offroads teams ? Is there any job that it is connected to riding ? If possible , please give me some informations . thanks.

Abdollah, our new Reader Profiles page is just what you need to get something going here in the states. Submit your profile along with photos of your bike.

The best way to show your ability is to get out to an AMA event and kick some ass. I'd also suggest getting involved with your local motorcycle club. You can usually find more information like this at a local shop.

In Need Of A Clunker

I am looking for an older model dirt bike in good condition. I was wondering
what you have and how much it would cost to ship it to Iowa. agramandgrampsia

We're not in the business of selling old clunkers. Your best bet would be to check out the local newspaper or classified publication. But if you insist on going to a dealer, here's a good place to start in your area.

Straight from the AMA

Lafferty Clinches 2001 Enduro Title

PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- Mike Lafferty of Millville, New Jersey, has clinched the 2001 AMA FMF Racing National Enduro Series championship, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) announced today. The 2001 title is Lafferty's second in a row, and his fourth in five years, all won aboard a KTM.

Although two rounds still remain in the 2001 series, Lafferty has built an insurmountable lead by winning six of the first seven rounds. His nearest competitors are Fred Hoess of Stanhope, New Jersey, and six-time series champion Randy Hawkins of Travelers Rest, South Carolina. Lafferty's four titles ties him with Terry Cunningham for fourth place in the history of the national enduro series, which began in 1923. The top three spots are held by Dick Burleson with eight titles, Bill Baird with seven, and Hawkins with six.

Ken Griffey Strikes Top Honors

The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) announced today that Ken Griffey, Jr. is the latest recipient of the AMA Hazel KolbBrighter Image Award. The presentation took place yesterday during a pre-game ceremony at Cinergy Field in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The award, which is the AMA's highest honor for activities that generate positive publicity for motorcycling, was presented to Griffey for his participation in motocross with his seven-year-old son, Trey.

"By supporting Trey's interest in motocross, Ken shows that motorcycling is a family activity," said Robert Rasor, President of the AMA. "He's most deserving of this award, and we're pleased to recognize his contribution to our sport."

The AMA Brighter Image Award was created in 1987. It was renamed in 1990 to honor the accomplishments of Hazel Kolb, the first woman to serve on the AMA's Board of Trustees. Past recipients include Jay Leno, Rosie O'Donnell, Dan Ackroyd, Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell, Governor Angus King (Maine), Mary Hart, and Malcolm Forbes.

Cannondale Adds GP Control System to 2002 Line Up

Cannondale will begin manufacturing 2002 models this week featuring OPTIMUM Power Technology's innovative GP Control fuel-injection system, company officials announced today. The GP Control system will ultimately be featured on all eight 2002 Cannondale ATV and motorcycle models as they debut in the coming months.

The GP Control system is a state-of-the-art electronic fuel-injection and engine management system that can be easily and extensively customized to maximize performance. The system features new hardware, including a flash memory programmable SAGEM MC1000 ECU (Engine Control Unit), and software including a base fuel-injection map tuned exclusively for Cannondale's radical 432cc four-stroke engine.

Cannondale is in its second year of manufacturing motorsports products with electronic fuel-injection. According to Cannondale Founder and President Joe Montgomery, the addition of the GP Control system is a major step forward for the company. "Beyond all the usual benefits associated with fuel-injection, the GP Control system gives our engines an unprecedented degree of tuneability," said Montgomery. "It's like our engine management system has gone from a Radio Shack calculator to a Cray supercomputer."

Electronic fuel-injection is superior to standard carburetion because it monitors, and automatically compensates for changes in, temperature and air pressure to constantly deliver the proper fuel/air mixture to the engine. This results in improved horsepower, better throttle response, improved cold and hot starts, reduced stalling, and better idling. Maintenance is also simplified, since fuel-injection replaces a standard carburetor that would normally need to be re-jetted for changes in altitude or seasonal changes in weather.

The GP Control system offers a range of tuneability that carburetors and other fuel-injection systems can't possibly match. Cannondale motorsports dealers, for example, can easily replace the base map that comes programmed into the GP Control system with one of several optional maps. Motorsports dealers who purchase available software will also have the ability to customize individual maps to suit a rider's preferences.
However, that's only the start of the incredible range of customization offered by the GP Control system. Customers who purchase an optional accessory kit, and who own a PC or hand-held Pocket PC computer, can easily customize their engines by either altering the base map or downloading alternative maps from OPTIMUM's web site. With the purchase of additional upgrades, including a handlebar-mounted Map Select switch with LED light cluster, riders can store up to three different maps in the ECU which they can choose from "on-the-fly" during a race.

The ultimate upgrade is the handlebar-mounted Rider Trim. Unlike the Map Select switch, however, the Rider Trim allows on-the-fly modifications to base maps. The rider can then easily toggle back to the base map to quickly compare performance between it and the modified map - all without stopping.

OPTIMUM Power Technology is a global company with ten years experience developing the world's most innovative recreational vehicle engine management systems. OPTIMUM has offices in the United States, England and Northern Ireland.

Cannondale is the world's premier manufacturer of high-performance bicycles, and an emerging presence in the off-road motorsports industry. The company will sell a total of four off-road motorcycle models and four ATVs in its 2002 motorsports line. All eight models will feature lightweight aluminum frames, and all utilize a fuel-injected, electric-start engine with a one-piece crankcase, cassette transmission, separate engine and clutch oils, and a reversed cylinder head with dual overhead-cams.

Cannondale is based in Bethel, Connecticut, and operates subsidiaries in Europe, Japan and Australia. The company manufactures all of its motorcycles, ATVs and bicycles at its two factories in southwestern Pennsylvania.

Kevin Strijbos claims title against the odds at Vantaa

The final round of the European 125cc championships in Vantaa ended in high drama as Kevin Strijbos overcame almost insurmountable odds to snatch the title away from Marc De Reuver. Strijbos, who had only turned sixteen a few weeks ago, came into this round eleven points behind De Reuver, and it seemed improbable that such a points lead could be attacked, especially since De Reuver is a hardened GP campaigner who currently occupies tenth position in the world championship standings.

Much to the delight of the home crowd, the holeshot in the first heat went to ever-popular Antti Kallonen on his KTM. Strijbos and De Reuver were in close attendance, and Estonian Aigair Leok surprised friend and foe with a blinding start which put him right up there with the leaders. Kallonen kept the lead for a while, but in the fourth lap Strijbos squeezed past to move ahead. De Reuver followed suit, and the battle was on. Strijbos dictated the race from the front, but on the sixth lap, De Reuver's relentless pressure paid off, and he moved into the lead. Strijbos was not going to take this lying down, and he grimly stuck to De Reuver's tail. When the Dutchman made a mistake in the whoops section, Strijbos slid past again, and he maintained his lead until the end. The victory was by no means comfortable, and De Reuver kept Strijbos honest all the time. Antti Kallonen grabbed the last podium spot, and received probably the loudest cheers. Aigar Leok made the best of his good start, and produced his best ride of the season to finish fourth. Although the field was widely spread out, there were a number of interesting two-; three - and four man battles for points positions throughout. Antoine Letellier and Tanel Leok battled fiercely for fifth position, and Leok got the better of Letellier at mid-race distance, but a crash late in the race allowed Letellier to reclaim his position. Behind these two riders, there was a race long struggle between Marvin Van Daele, Enrico Oddenino, Jurgen Wybo and Tyla Rattray, with Van Daele finally coming out on top in this group. De Reuver's championship lead had shrunk to eight points going into the last heat, and although the pressure was on him, it seemed unlikely that the would finish lower than 4th position, which would ensure him of championship victory.

As the pack stormed down the start straight for the second time, it was Strijbos who claimed a massive holeshot. It appears that the two top protagonists touched during the start, and De Reuver came off the worst. When the first lap was completed, De Reuver was in a lowly 16th position with a lot of work to do. Marvin Van Daele and Antti Kallonen made good progress in the front group, but a storming Tanel Leok rode with determination to get into second position by the 4th lap. Italian Enrico Oddenino showed his GP experience and rode well to wrok himself into fourth position, but a crash in the whoops section cost him valuable places, and he finally ended up in sixth position. De Reuver was meanwhile making his upmarch through the pack, and with just more than hafl the race gone, he had worked his way into severnth position. He still had riders of the calibre of Van Daele, Letellier and Oddenino ahead of him before he could get into fourth position, which meant that the Dutch youngster would have his work cut out if he were to claim the championship. The end of his charge came when he crashed in the whoops section, forcing his retirement. Strijbos meanwhile rode a perfect race from the front and won in regal fashion. Behind him Tanel Leok crossed the line in second position, with Antti Kallonen claiming his second podium finish for the day. Antoine Letellier and Marvin Van Daele finished off a steady day by finishing fourth and fifth respectively.

Grand Prix Of Switzerland

Tenth round of the World Motocross Championship was staged last sunday at Roggenburg, in the Jura Alps of Switzerland. Team Yamaha SKITTLES® had at one time three riders placed in the first five positions of the 125cc and 250cc class's. Next week end the marathon of the motocross continues near Stuttgart in Germany on classic Gaildorf circuit, transmitted live in Italy. Great success in Italy for the live show of Switzerland Grand Prix, televised by Mediaset Italia 1, with 1,3 millions of attendance (share 10,23%).

Sunday with no other international motor sport, the Grand Prix of Switzerland on the slopes of the German alps, the hillside track provided a great theatre of motocross producing some of the best racing of the 2001 season.

With sunny conditions and a clear blue sky, the first position in the 125cc class went once again to James Dobb, his 7th win of the season, he has now virtually assured himself his first world title. Alessio Chiodi wasted a great opportunity to climb onto the podium, after a great start in 3rd position he was to be passed by Seguy and then Ramon. Chicco finished 5th which gave him 11 points, he continues the aim of 3rd position in the classifications, to take the bronze medal as the season enters the final few rounds. The race was to end on the first lap for Alexander Belometti, he was involved in a collision with the Dutch rider, Eggens. The 250cc was once again the main event of the day's activities, with a victory for Claudio Federici, SKITTLES® riders were well positioned during the opening laps, but to many mistakes jeopardized the possibility of the Team taking to the podium with a double success. Beirer slipped on the 18th lap, falling back to sixth position while Demaria could not withstand the charge and final push from Reed and Crockard during the final laps when he slipped to 4th. The leader of the World Series, Frenchman Pichon, fall early in the race, but came back to finish in 8th position.

Fabrizio BERNI (General Manager Yamaha SKITTLES®): "In Switzerland we have wasted two great opportunities: in the 125cc class, Chiodi had a what looked like a concrete chance to take a great result and podium, we all believed he had it in him and that he would take the podium. Pit Beirer rode in the frantic 250 race a great early race performance but despite his great efforts he came could only finish 6th. I am disappointed because three of our riders were all in good positions after the start but still none of them succeeded in climbing onto the platform. The Swiss day is altogether disappointing since we were well placed in both the 125cc and again in the 250cc. The consolation still remains, however that we have once again shown that we have a great competitiveness, which we should reward us in the final four competitions in this world championship. Concluding, I'm very happy for the success of our sport to the great public of the italian television. I hope this way coninuing for the next season.

Chiodi takes the tenth podium for the Yamaha Skittles Team

Eleventh round of the World Championship Motocross Sunday in the Gaildorf, Germany. The Skittles Yamaha riders were once again on the top with Alessio Chiodi who took the tenth podium of the season for the team. For Chiodi it was his third podium of the season in the 125 race. Alessandro Belometti took seventh in the 125 race Yves Demaria just failed to reach the podium in the 250cc class – but earned a superb fourth place, a bad crash stopped local idol Pit Beirer in the 250cc race. James Dobb and Mickael Pichon took the respective titles in the 125 and 250 class.

For the second time this season the world championship motocross visited Germany – this time in the village of Gaildorf in the south part of the country and on a warm summer day in the beautiful rolling hills of this track.

The 125 race was very exciting. Luigi Seguy took the win after an unbelievable scrap in the last lap with Steve Ramon.

Chiodi had a good start but in the middle of the race had to slow when he got arm pump but towards the end of the race it faded and he caught Jamie Dobb, the new world champion, and passed him to claim third place on the podium. It was a good race for Alex Belometti too. He qualified ninth and battled his way to seventh in the race in front of Marc de Reuver and Thomas Traversini. The 250race, covered live by Mediaset and Eurosport, was dominated by Mickael Pichon who took a fantastic win and claimed his first World title. Chad Reed and Josh Coppins completed the podium. Yves Demaria tried to catch Coppins all race long and was never more than 30 yards behind the Kiwi but was forced to accept fourth place.

The local hero, Pit Beirer crashed on the fourth lap and was forced to stop to get his bike looked over by team technician, by the time he got going again, he was out of the points.

Pit Beirer: ( Yamaha Skittles YZ250cc ) 25th Position one lap down on Pichon

"I was very angry and disappointed for the race of Sunday, because my plan was to put pressure on Reed and wait for him to make a mistake. But after a jump, just before a chicane, I decided to change my line and my wheels went a rut and I crashed. It was a very big crash. I was forced to pit to fix the rear end of the bike and when I tried to come back but it was impossible. During the last few laps I fell again."

Yves Demaria: ( Yamaha Skittles YZ250cc ) 4th position at 10'277 behind Pichon

"I'm very angry too about the race of Sunday. I know fourth is not so bad but I am angry. My race was ruined by a very bad choice of tyres. I used the hard compound rubber but in the first sighting lap I knew the track was too slippery and I never found the right grip all race. During the last three laps I tried so hard to catch Coppins. I made the fastest lap of the race but was it was too late to pass him."

Alessio Chiodi ( Yamaha Skittles 125cc ) 3rd position behind L Seguy.

"Yesterday finally I'm on the podium again. For me it yesterday was important. My last podium was in Australia in April. I think the right choice was move to Belgium and work with George Jobe. We worked on my starts, the rhythm of the race, and we made some modifications to my training programme. In fact, yesterday had a good start, but I made some mistakes in the first uphill. I had some problems with arm-pump in the first half of the race but then I caught Dobb in the closing laps and was faster than Ramon at the end. Third place is good for me – I can build on this."

Alessandro Belometti ( Yamaha Skittles 125cc ) 7th position behind L Seguy

"I was only eighth in the first lap of therace of Sunday. I tried to ride as hard as I could and fought hard with Traversini. Then I passed De Reuver and improved my position to seventh at the end. It's not such a great result but the most important thing is that every race I am improving."
