Davi Millsaps Enlists SoCal SuperTrucks for GMC Sierra Build

Davi Millsaps has had a long, successful career on a dirt bike. For the 2016 Monster Energy AMA Supercross season, the veteran transitioned from a Kawasaki last season to a new-to-him KTM 450 SX-F with the BTO Sports KTM team. In spite of the change, Millsaps has consistently run in the top 10 this year and currently sits eighth in the point standings in the 450 class, finishing fourth just this past weekend in Atlanta.

Obviously Millsaps doesn’t have a regular day job, and he can beat the pants off of 99.9 percent of the population on a motocross track, but in many ways he’s just like many of us: he’s married, has a few kids, and until recently he had a truck sitting in his driveway that he wanted to fix up.

“I’ve had this truck for almost two years now, and it just didn’t look that great stock to be honest,” Millsaps said. “So I hit up Casey [Coughlin] over at SoCal SuperTrucks and, over time, it’s been a work in progress.”

Millsaps is referring to his 2015 Sierra 2500HD, which he eventually enlisted SoCal SuperTrucks in San Bernardino, California, to help build up. SCST is a shop we’ve worked with many times in the past, so we were curious when we heard about the build what a professional Supercross racer would be looking to do. Proving he’s down-to-Earth, Millsaps wasn’t interested in something extreme – he wanted many of the same basic upgrades that many of us do.

“I’m not a big flashy, over-the-top kind of guy,” Millsaps said. “I wanted the chrome gone, I wanted a leveling kit, wheels and tires and that’s really all I cared about. With all of the extras that we ended up doing, it just made it that much more cool.”

Going beyond a simple leveling kit, SoCal SuperTrucks went a step further with the hefty ¾-ton diesel and installed the ICON Stage 4 Suspension System, which includes 2.5-inch front remote reservoir and rear 2.5-inch piggyback reservoir shocks, both with ICON’s CDC compression damping control, uniball upper controls arms and a 2.25-inch front lift. McGaughy’s 1-inch rear lowering shackles were installed as well to help the tires really fill the fenderwells. For wheels, Millsaps is rocking the Fuel Offroad 20 x 9s D563 Savage with the gloss black and machines finish and wrapped them with 35 x 12.5 Nitto Trail Grappler tires.

For a little added performance boost, SoCal SuperTrucks fitted the Sierra with an Advanced Flow Engineering’s Mach Force XP DPF-Back exhaust that features a big 6-inch black tip. To improve airflow, an aFe Elite Pro-Dry Stage 2 intake system was installed to more efficiently feed air to the 6.6-liter Duramax turbo-diesel engine. aFe’s high-capacity rear differential cover is also used to keep fluid in the rear end cool.

“It rides a lot smoother and better, especially on the bumpy California freeways,” Millsaps said. “The exhaust is nice and the intake makes a nice power improvement. So far it has been great.”

Rigid Industries D2 Fog Lights and mounting system help provide some additional auxiliary lighting down low, while SoCal SuperTrucks used its roof mounting bracket kit to secure the 54-inch Rigid RDS LED light bar.

AMP Research Powersteps were installed for making getting into and out of the truck a little bit easier - especially for the family. SoCal SuperTrucks also addressed one of Millsaps’ initial concerns of removing the chrome by paint-matching the grille inserts, GMC logo, front and rear bumpers and sensors, mirror caps and more. Essentially all badges and body molding were either removed or color matched on the Sierra.

One last final touch is an interior accent where the brown woodgrain panels on the door and dash were replaced with a hydro-dipped black piano black woodgrain to complement the overall package.

With a truck this nice, don’t expect to see Millsaps hammering around the desert in his new Sierra. It’ll get off the highway from time to time, but even though it could handle quite a bit the Sierra won’t be wheeled regularly.

“It will see as much as dirt often as I come to the dirt bike track - that’s about it,” Millsaps said with a smile. “To me, it’s too nice of a truck. If I’m going to do something off-road then I’d build a buggy or something that belongs in the dirt. But not this thing! It’s too pretty.”

The good news is that the CDC adjusters on his ICON shocks can be softened for on-road travel and readjusted for when it gets off of pavement.

Pretty or not, Millsaps’ Sierra is far more ready for adventure when the road ends, and although its customization is subtle and clean, his truck is still a head-turner in the looks department. Millsaps may spend his weekends airing it out over 65-foot triple jump like Supercross superhero he is, but he’s just like the rest of us in that he just wanted a cool truck he can be proud of. The package built with SoCal SuperTrucks certainly looks to be a winner in our books.
