SCORE Official Results for Baja 500, Announcement on 3 Fatalities

SCORE has released the official results for all classes for the 48th Bud Light SCORE Baja 500. Gustavo Vildosola Jr. (“Tavo”) earned the overall Trophy Truck victory after edging out Rob MacCachren. Vildosola won by 3 minutes on corrected time in spite of the fact that MacCachren crossed the finish line first in Ensenada. Robby Wilson earned the victory in Class 1, defeating Justin Davis by more than 13 minutes.

Colton Udall and Mark Samuels celebrate their Pro Motorcycle win.

In Pro Motorcycle, Colton Udall and Mark Samuels earned the victory, while Javier Robles Jr. took the win in the Pro Quad class. Unfortunately the race was marred by three fatalities, two of which were dirt bike racers. SCORE official released a statement regarding the events, one of which delayed all of the four-wheeled vehicles other than most of the Trophy Truck class from leaving the line by more than an hour. Here is SCORE’s official statement:

“The closing time on the race course was delayed by one hour, 10 minutes as SCORE and local officials worked on the aftermath of an accident early during the start of the cars, trucks and UTVs involving a race truck within a half mile of the start. Racer Todd Pedersen, Orem, Utah, while negotiating a turn entering the Ensenada wash and attempting to avoid some fans, eventually hit three spectators. An eight-year old boy was fatally injured in the accident, according to police on the scene. He was transported to an Ensenada hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The boy’s mother was hospitalized and is reported in stable condition at a hospital in Ensenada with head and leg injuries. The identities of the two victims were not released.

“In the first racer fatality, Pro Moto Unlimited rider Travis Livingston, 34, of Palmdale, Calif., crashed at race mile 288.9. When SCORE medical personnel arrived, while attempting to stabilize him, Livingston went into cardiac arrest and could not be revived. In the second racer fatality, Sportsman Moto rider Noah Evermann, 34, of Alaska, was found dead near his motorcycle at race mile 180.9 by another race team.

Robby Gordon Leads SCORE Baja 500 Trophy Truck Qualifying

“No further information was released regarding all three accidents as all three are still being investigated by Ensenada Municipal Police.”

The battle in the premier Trophy Truck class was tight down to the wire, with each of the trucks coming off of the start line in Ensenada 1 minute apart. MacCachren was fourth off the line while Vildosola came off the line thirteenth, with starting spots based on qualifying times held last Thursday. MacCachren was actually the first Trophy Truck across the line on Saturday evening, as he passed Carlos Lopez, who was physically leading the race for quite some time, in the final 20 miles. Although MacCachren crossed the line first, his earlier starting position meant Vildosola had 9 minutes to cross the finish line after MacCachren. Right at the 6-minute mark, Vildosola crossed the line to secure his first Baja 500 victory, completing the 477.52-mile race in 8 hours, 20 minutes and 52 seconds, exactly 3 minutes ahead of MacCachren.

Vildosola was able to work through the pack of trucks ahead of him to get into contention, but

“In the first 100 miles we were just navigating by instruments,” Vildosola said. “We couldn't see anything and we were behind a bunch of trucks. I knew I had to be very patient and thankfully I was. I wasn't pushing hard in the dust and I was waiting for my moments. We had a couple of good ones and passed a couple of guys running and a couple of guys in the pits until finally we got in some clean air.”

The heat during the race was a major factor, as temperatures in some sections of the race course reportedly reached as high as 115 degrees Fahrenheit (some reports even suggested temperatures at 120 degrees).

“We survived the heat and I might be a little bit dehydrated and I've got a headache but we are good,” Vildosola said. “I couldn’t get any water because when I had the opportunity to it was on the dry lakebed and we were going 120 mph. The water was getting all over my face mask and my face, but nothing was going in my mouth. I’m feeling pretty dehydrated right now. It was extremely hot. Thankfully we didn’t have to get out of the truck today.”

MacCachren also said the heat was a factor, but not so much for himself but for the health of the truck.

“For the most part everything went pretty good,” MacCachren said. “We really had to pay attention to our temperatures because our engine water was getting really hot. We had to take care of it and keep it under 240 degrees which is pretty extreme.

“By the time I had clean air we were in the heat of the day over there in Cohabuzo and you couldn’t run hard because I had to slow down to keep the truck cool. We just have to work on our cooling. We knew it was going to be hot, and you do everything you can to get your truck to run cool, but now in hindsight I wish it would’ve run cooler so I could’ve run hard instead of running 80 or 90 percent or so.”

Ronny Wilson

In Class 1 the Wilson family team, led by driver of record Ronny Wilson, was able to work through the pack to get into contention with early race leader Justin Davis.

“We started 15th and were the third car on the road in Borrego,” Brian Wilson said.” We went down to San Felipe and Ronny got in the car and had a clean run and ended up catching Justin Davis (No. 185) right around mile 260. He was in the pits and we splashed fuel and came back out. We got around the 175 (Jaime Huerta Jr.) car in the Mike's loop. We had Justin chasing us for the last 150 miles. He started second and we started 15th so we knew we had him on time. We drove a conservative pace to keep him behind us. We executed well. It was really hot and we tried to not overcook the shocks and torque converter.”

Davis has one issue during this race but also noted that the heat presented another set of variables to compete with during the race.

“We had one flat after the summit down in the wash,” Davis said. “We tried to run down the Wilsons but we just couldn't. Coming down the summit into San Felipe the temperatures were so hot and trying to stay hydrated was a challenge.”

In the Trophy Truck Spec class, Steven Eugenio and Larry Conner shared driving duties in the 207 truck for this year’s Baja 500, and the pairing had great success by winning the class.

Steven Eugenio

“We got behind some Class 1 cars so we were in the dust quite a bit and the engine temperature was really hot for the first 50 to 75 miles out of San Felipe,” Conner said. “We would run for a while and then back it down so it didn't get overheated. If we had kept running hard it would have blown up.”

In Class 10, Patrick Dailey and co-driver Travis Clark took the win, but Dailey credited Clarke with doing most of the heavy lifting during the race.

“Travis won this race,” Dailey said. “All I had to do was pre-run back. We had such a big lead when I got in the car. The pits were perfect and our pre-running was perfect and we got around all of the tough spots.”

In Class 1/2-1600, brothers Ramon and Cisco Bio took the victory.

“My brother is the one to thank for this finish,” Cisco said. “He drove it in and made up the most crucial time.”

Wayne Matlock earned the win in the Pro UTV class, and he did so as the lone driver of the entire race.

“That was one tough and dusty course,” Matlock said. “We had a pretty good run and we had little clutch issues here and there but other than that the car was flawless. We got stuck in the bottleneck and went from first to eighth really quickly. It happens.”
