1000 horsepower. 350-mile range. $112K. Those are the headline figures for 2022 GMC Hummer EV. But you’re here for the tasty off-road specs, right? Let’s dive in.

Anyone with a long memory will recall OG-grade Hummers easily scampering over the world’s toughest terrain. This new all-electric pickup truck seeks to recapture some of that magic. This time around, however, it benefits from an extra three decades of tech advancements.

Topping the gee-whiz chart on the upcoming 2022 GMC Hummer EV? A feature called CrabWalk. Standard on every trim except the entry-level model, this tool permits the Hummer EV to drive diagonally thanks to trickery with the truck’s four-wheel steering system. At low speeds, all four wheels can point up to 10 degrees in the same direction, permitting off-road maneuvers heretofore only attempted in Forza Horizon. At higher speeds, the system can also angle the rear tires, effectively reducing turning radius and improving on-road handling. Anyone with really long memories will be having visions of the Quadrasteer system from 20 years ago.

A new Extract Mode uses GMC Hummer EV’s air suspension to temporarily lift the truck to 15.9 inches of ground clearance at very low speeds. Standard ground clearance in Terrain Mode is 11.9 inches. It is standard on Edition 1 trucks and optional on EV2X and EV3X trims. Approach angles will increase from 44.3 to nearly 50 degrees and water fording jumps to 31 inches. Interestingly, it doesn’t seem to be as-yet fully baked since Edition 1 models will require a “software update” for this feature after delivery.

As for power, while the 1000-horsepower figure will get all the attention, most Hummer EVs will ship with far fewer ponies since – in America – it is only the three-motor Edition 1 truck which gets that number. The EV3X also has a trio of electric motors but is listed at 850hp for American markets. Both of the two-motor trucks, the EV2X and EV2, receive a rating of 625 ponies. Check out the chart below for specific power numbers, availability dates, and pricing.

Those who do choose to take their six-figure 2022 GMC Hummer EV off road will be doing so in the lap of luxury. While there are a few familiar touchpoints (peep the steering wheel and rear seat sharing much with Sierra), this truck’s center stack and instrument gauges are unique. Certain models of Hummer EV will also crib Super Cruise and its autonomous driving aids from Cadillac.

How about it? Is the new Hummer EV what you expected? How about the pricing? Sound off in the comments below.
