A meal of Rock au Gratin with a side of boulders.

The Southern Rock Racing Series is a ten-event card providing some serious entertainment for the off-road enthusiast. With some of them pushing 1000 horsepower, these rock-bouncing buggies take the sport racing to a whole ‘nother level.

The gearheads at Busted Knuckle Video put together a montage of action from the series’ first round, held at Northwest OHV Park in Bridgeport, Texas. Check out the rig featured in the lead image above, appearing at about nine minutes into the video. In spite of an outrageous backflip – which doesn’t appear to inflict any damage on the driver – the machine makes it up and over the obstacle, even managing to post an official time in the face of busted parts and newly-flattened tires.

In fact, every racer that runs the course puts on an impressive show, most of whom catch some big air as they crest the hill to cover the last few feet and cross the finish line.

Like all good shows, the owners of these brutes have given them all names, ranging from Screaming Blue to Predator. A quick look at the spec sheets reveal LSX motors, 43-inch tires, King triple-bypass shocks, and Turbo 400 transmissions.

There are a handful of more races throughout the Spring season, before taking a break during the months of May and June. Once July hits, the action doesn’t stop until October. You can bet your humble author will be keeping an eye on this race series in 2019!
