The 2019 Ford Ranger fuel economy figures have been announced.

Ford’s new midsize pickup will return 21 mpg city, 26 mpg highway and 23 mpg combined when equipped rear-wheel drive. Moving to a Ranger 4×4 will lower the fuel economy to 20 mpg city, 24 mpg highway and 22 mpg combined.

The only available powertrain on the 2019 Ford Ranger is a 2.3-liter turbocharged EcoBoost engine, which makes 270 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. The only transmission option is a 10-speed automatic.

The Ford Ranger’s fuel economy figures outclass those of the four-cylinder Chevrolet Colorado and Toyota Tacoma. The RWD, 2.5-liter four-cylinder Colorado returns 20 mpg city, 26 mpg highway and 22 mpg combined. The 2.7-liter-equipped RWD Tacoma returns 20 mpg city and 23 mpg highway for 21 mpg combined.

The Ranger is more powerful than both the four-cylinder Colorado and four-cylinder Tacoma as well, which make 200 hp and 160 hp, respectively.

For reference, the Colorado V6 with RWD returns 18 mpg city and 25 mpg highway for 20 mpg combined. The Tacoma V6 is rated at 19 mpg city and 25 mpg highway for 20 mpg combined. The Ranger offers just one powertrain but splits Chevy’s and Toyota’s engine offerings down the middle with its 270 hp four-cylinder.

The 2019 Ford Ranger will go on sale early next year with a starting price of $24,300.
