Nissan could very well be looking at building a right-hook Titan for Australian and South African markets.

In the grand scheme of truck sales, the Titan is a relative minnow. So far this year in America, Nissan has sold 41,953 of its full-sizer while Ford has moved 749,456 F-Series pickups. To say there’s a disparity there would be an understatement akin to saying that only a small amount of turkey will be eaten in America over the next few days.

There are huge advantages to being several sizes smaller than the competition, however, not the least of which is the ability to pivot more quickly in an effort to respond to market demands. Being agile is a Very Good Thing.

Rumours are surfacing that Nissan is considering a right-hand drive version of the Titan to serve markets such as Australia. If they were to do so, they would be the first large American truck offered in RHD straight from the factory. A number of shops and kits currently exist in local markets to convert Silverados and F-150s to right-hand drive but it is commonly known that the procedure is eye-wateringly expensive, even if they are factory approved.

Expanding beyond its North American base in this manner would be easier for Nissan to justify than Ford, for example. Why? Well, at current volumes, it wouldn’t take too many of these foreign-market Titans to make up a significant percentage of total production. Even if fewer than 10,000 were sold in places like Oz and Johannesburg, that would still make up almost a quarter of current sales. Numbers like that make the business case much more appealing despite what would surely be a multi-million dollar investment.

Consider, too, that the Nissan name is quite popular and carries a lot of weight in RHD markets. The Patrol SUV is enjoys legend status in these countries, along with the smaller Nissan pickups that are called ‘bakkies’ by some locals.

Trippy.

The crew from Nissan was in Morocco recently with a few Titans, fuelling this speculation. In an interview with 4×4 Australia, the company’s chief product specialist confirmed that the Titan will indeed expand beyond its North American base. He was understandably mum on exactly where it might venture.

Closer to home, the American-market Titan receives a raft of upgrades for 2019, including a sorely-needed new infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The tasty Midnight Edition is back for this year as well, and SV trims will enjoy a color-keyed grille instead of the old chrome maw. A couple of new paint choices are on the palette as well.
