Chevy fans who want a Trail Boss but aren’t in love with That Grille are in luck.

Last week, we took you on a tour of the 2019 Chevy Silverado in Canada’s far North. While there, we learned:

  • the people are great
  • it can get bloody cold
  • any 2019 Silverado can get the Trail Boss package

Yes, that’s right. According to GM brass, customers who want the Trail Boss truck’s off-road capability but don’t care for that trim’s unique styling can get the special suspension and other components added at their dealer after signing on the dotted line for any of the other Silverado trims.

In case you need a refresher, the Trail Boss includes a 2-inch factory lift kit in addition to the Z71 Off-Road package. This also imbues the truck with a locking rear diff, skid plates, Rancho shocks, and 18-inch Goodyear Duratrac tires.

The lone item not to be included in an after-the-fact Trail Boss conversion are the Duratracs. This is both good and bad, since the factory meats won’t acquit themselves as well on the trails as the Goodyears but it does leave customers free to select whatever brand of tire they want – BFGoodrich KO2s, the aforementioned Duratracs, or any other brand.

Reps were mum on the actual cost but expect it to ring in a bit more than if you spec’d out the truck as a Trail Boss from the factory. After all, technicians will need to be paid to install the gear. Don’t forget to add in extra cheddar for the off-road tires that aren’t included in the deal.

Still, the thought of a High Country Trail Boss is pretty alluring, as that leather lined lux-truck would arguably be a response to market segment no one is currently serving: a chrome-laden pickup with all-leather e’rything and a power up/down tailgate. One could argue the new Ram Rebel 12 fits part of that bill but its looks may be too aggro for some customers.

This author prefers the color-keyed appearance of the RST trim, a model which is available with or without a bevy of creature comforts. That truck with the Trail Boss kit would look the business.

Pricing hasn’t yet been released for the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado. Look for it in early October.
