Electric off-road racing? With the proposed Extreme E series, it could happen.

Off-road fans who wish to wheel in silence have an increasing number of options from which to choose. Not the least of which is the Bollinger B1, styled like the box it shipped in but unique for its ability to load cargo the entire way through its squared-off body. Other privateers are dipping their toes into the all-electric off-road market, too.

According to the sleuths over at motorsport.com, the brains behind the all-electric Formula E racing series are taking it upon themselves to expand the world of electric racing to the off-road world. Tentatively called Extreme E, this class of electric SUV racers would compete in challenging locations like the Himalayas and the Arctic.

Supported by the current CEO of Formula E, the electric off-road series would be a spec series with limited areas for team development of the rigs. However, all good racing teams constantly paw through the rulebook to find areas for ‘creative interpretation’. Expect the same here.

Speculation about how machines in the series would look is one of the most interesting details of this whole endeavor. If it happens, Extreme E may allow manufacturers to drape silhouette racing designs of their own road-going models over the series-spec chassis. This would make for excellent variations in style between competitors, as the Jag I-Pace looks completely different from the Bollinger B1, for example.

Race locations could also be epic, given two examples given to date of the Himalayas and the Arctic. If one were given to bouts of speculation, sites in the desert near Dubai or the wilds of South America would also be grand settings.

Speaking to motorsport.com, Formula E head honcho Alejandro Agag stated “all I can say is that it’s a new project that will be operated by Formula E,” and that “the new project is still in very early stages.”
