Box, bed, pan – whatever you call it, the cargo area aft of the cab is an important part of any pickup. Chevy has decided to call theirs the Durabed.

The 2019 Silverado ushers in a new generation of Chevy trucks, complete with different styles, trims, and engine options. The General has also decided to double down on the touting of its cargo capacity, marketing the new Silverado’s cargo box as the Durabed.

Chevy claims best-in-class cargo volume, box depth, and box length at floor. This will be great news for anyone who uses their truck for hauling anything more than air. The Durabed will feature up to 12 fixed tie-downs for securing cargo, plus a power-down and power-up tailgate. Nine moveable tie-downs are also available.

Those tie-downs are, by the way, now arrayed at varying heights, a boon for users who secure loads of different heights while hauling their gear. This means no more awkward shenanigans with ratchet straps and rope.

“The bed is the heart and soul of any pickup, so we made several improvements to the bed of the all-new Silverado to give our customers an even better hauling experience,” said Tim Herrick, executive chief engineer, Full-Size Trucks, General Motors. “We’ve added so many features and benefits that it deserves its own name – Durabed.”

GM says the short box option gains a total of 10 cubic feet in 2019 over its 2018 cousin, while the standard and long boxes grow by similar amounts. This is partially due to taller sidewalls which give greater cargo box depth but is also a result of some measuring-tape magic deployed by Chevy engineers.

Measured at the floor, the Durabed short box has a three-inch advantage over the 2019 F-150 and 2019 Ram 1500. With an ever increasing number of consumers choosing a crew cab/short box configuration, this will allow Chevy to brag about the 2019 Silverado’s cargo carrying superiority.

Other features available on the Durabed include in-bed LED lighting and a household power outlet. Those handy CornerSteps are now deeper and wider to accommodate steel-toed work boots.

Depending on trim level, customers will find one of four tailgates on their snazzy 2019 Silverado. A standard gate is manually lockable with no lift assists, just like on my grandfather’s 1986 Custom Deluxe. It’ll be gauaranteed to have a better fit than Pop’s ’86, though.

Moving up through the tailgate ranks, the same ‘gate as described above will also be available with a lift assist. The next option will layer power lock and power release functions on top of those features. High-zoot LTZ and High Country Silverado trucks earn a tailgate which raises or lowers using the key fob, touchpads on the gate, or button in the cabin. GMC’s trick tailgate-within-a-tailgate remains exclusive to that brand for now.

The 2019 Chevrolet Silverado goes on sale this fall.
