Sierra-AT4-vs-Rebel

Truck makers have figured out there’s a good market for pickups that have greater-than-average off-road capability but aren’t priced into the stratosphere and it’s making our choices harder than ever.

This is the latest in our Dirt Dispute series where we ask you, the reader, to tell us which off-road machine you like more in a poll (located at the bottom of the post). So read on and then make your decision on which truck is best!

Ram unleashed the Rebel in 2015, creating a truck with 33-inch all-terrain tires and Bilstein shocks for drivers who want some off-road cred without beating themselves up on the street. Well, the Rebel is back in the new 2019 Ram with skid plates, 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler Duratac tires, tow hooks, Bilstein shocks with remote reservoirs and a locking rear diff.

With 0.5 extra of a turn lock-to-lock compared to a standard Crew Cab Ram, the Rebel allows off-roaders to more precisely navigate that rocky trail. Plus, with the now-optional air suspension in Off Road II mode, the Rebel affords 27.1 degrees of departure angle and 10.8 inches of ground clearance sans skid plate. Ground clearance sits at 9.1-inches to the front axle and 9.8-inches to the body without a skid plate or the lifted airbags.

With its redesigned 2019 half-ton trucks, General Motors is offering more off-road goodies than ever right from the dealership. First Chevrolet launched the Silverado Trail Boss and now GMC has revealed the AT4 sub-brand on its new 2019 Sierra. Jacked with a 2-inch lift, Rancho shocks, and a Traction Select system, the AT4 blazes an off-road trail straight into the Rebel’s backyard. And, oh yeah, you’ll be able to get it with a burly 6.2L V8 or torquey 3.0L diesel inline-six.

GMC’s trick MultiPro six-way tailgate is on board the AT4, too. Other neat party tricks? A traction select system featuring downhill descent control and a heads-up display with an off-road inclinometer.

The new 2019 Ram is hitting dealerships right now while the redesigned GMC Sierra will go on sale later this year. So the question is, in the battle of 2019 Ram 1500 Rebel vs 2019 GMC Sierra AT4, which one would you rather park in your driveway?
