The 40th running of the legendary Dakar rally is over, and the winners have been crowned, with a bittersweet win for the factory Peugeot team in the cars, as the brand plans to exit the Dakar. 

Carlos Sainz raced to his second Dakar rally win in the cars for the Peugeot team, finishing all the stages in 49:16:18. Following him are two Toyotas, in second is Nasser Al-Attiyah who was off the pace by 43 minutes, while third is Giniel de Villiers.

Peugeot took the fourth spot with Mr. Dakar aka Stephane Peterhansel, who had the lead before a major accident tore his rear end suspension apart on a stage.

Bikes

Matthias Walkner - Red Bull KTM Factory Racing - Dakar Rally 2018

The win in the bikes goes to Matthias Walkner on his KTM, finishing the race faster than anyone else regardless of vehicle, completing it in 43:06:01. Kevin Benavides on a Honda came in second and was only 16 minutes back from the leader, the closest of any category. Another KTM carried third place racer Tony Price to the podium, finishing just 23 minutes back.

Quads

Ignacio Casale grabbed the win in the quad category and led for the entire race, a rarity in the rally. Casale never finished worse than fourth on a stage and he clinched five stage wins along the way, finishing with a total time of 53:47:04 on his Yamaha Raptor 700. Yamaha swept the podium in the quad category providing machines to all five of the top riders. Nicolas Cavigliasso finished second, back by 1:38:52.

In the side-by-sides, Reinaldo Varela from the South Racing team won behind the wheel of a Can-Am Maverick X3 Turbo R. Varela and his partner Gustavo Gugelmin had 5 stage victories and engaged in a battle with second place racer Patrice Garrouste in his Polaris, who also picked up 5 stage wins. In the end, Garrouste finished 57 minutes behind first place, while the third place Polaris of Claude Fournier finished a whopping ten hours back from first.

Trucks

In the big trucks, the Russian Kamaz team took two of the three podium spots, with Eduard Nikolaev taking the overall win with a time of 54:57:37. The Maz truck of Siarhei Viazovich finished second, back by 3:57:17 from Nikolaev.

Nikolaev had stiff competition from Argentinian driver Federico Villagra, until his transmission failed, causing him to exit the rally. On the second last stage, Villagra was just one second back from Nikolaev.
