Gearheads who count themselves as having feet firmly in both the off-road and electric vehicle camps will soon have a vehicle to placate those seemingly opposite interests.

The Bollinger B1, set to be revealed next week on July 27 in New York, is an all-electric on and off road sport utility truck.

The all-aluminum chassis with a high-strength low alloy steel rollover structure boasts some gonzo off-road vehicle proportions. Its wheelbase of 105 inches is eleven inches shorter than that found on a Wrangler Unlimited, and its 68-inch front and rear track is half a foot wider than the Jeep. Naturally, the B1 is all-wheel drive.

Impressive, but here’s where the numbers really get interesting: with an approach angle of 56 degrees, departure angle of 53 degrees, and break over angle of 33 degrees, Bollinger’s off-roader should be able to scamper up and over just about the gnarliest obstacles drivers can throw at it. Alert readers will note the approach angle far outstrips that of the Wrangler Rubicon, measured at a 42.2 degrees and nearly doubles the Raptor’s maximum angle of attack. Ground clearance is said to be a jacked 15.5 inches thanks to knuckle housed, geared axle hubs.Bollinger-Interior-1

Shadowy teaser pictures released in May showcase a utilitarian interior which reminds this author of a modern take on the Jeep CJ-7. Flat aluminum plates abound, showing off exposed rivets, round gauges, and tubular vents for the HVAC system which span the width of the dash and look like perforated metal water pipes. A baseball bat of a gearshift sprouts from the steering column like an overgrown larch.

No word on range but it’s a safe bet that it’ll be more than enough to wheel drivers through a few trails before heading back to base camp where, theoretically, the truck could be used to power some electric devices.

Tesla has taught us that a great benefit of an all-electric drivetrain is its ability to offer 100 percent of its torque right off the line at zero rpm. On the street, that characteristic provides face bending acceleration. Off-road, where torque is king and momentum is your friend, it should prove to be an equally useful trait.

Off-road.com will be attending the reveal live next Thursday, July 27, so make sure to come back and see live photos and video.
