Former Indycar driver, NASCAR driver/team owner, short-course race series promoter and desert racing superstar Robby Gordon set the fastest qualifying time in the featured SCORE Trophy Truck division during the special qualifying session held at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in conjunction with SEMA week Tuesday night. Gordon will start in the number one spot for next week’s 47th annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000.

In front of a large crowd at the LVMS, Gordon blistered the dirt and asphalt that made up the technical 3.6-mile course, covering the required distance in 3 minutes, 52.902 seconds at an average speed of 55.65 miles per hour in his Speed Energy Gordon Motorsports Chevy CK1500.

Gordon outpaced three local Las Vegas desert racing stars in Rob MacCachren, Bryce Menzies and B.J. Baldwin, all of whom broke the four-minute barrier Tuesday night.  MacCachren was second fastest, posting a time of 3:54.014 (55.38mph) in the No. 11 Rockstar Energy MacCachren Motorsports Ford F-150. Menzies was third, with a time of 3:59.514 (54.11mph) in the No. 70 Red Bull Menzies Motorsports Ford F-150, and Baldwin was fourth in 3:59.886 (54.03mph) in the No. 1 Monster Energy Baldwin Motorsports Chevy Silverado. For his efforts, Gordon also received the Method Race Wheels $2500 Fastest Qualifier Award.

A field of 20 SCORE Trophy Trucks and four Class 1 open-wheel race cars participated in the optional qualifying for starting positions within their respective classes. SCORE Trophy Truck has 31 official entries to date at Class 1 has 18 total entries so far.

The 2014 Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 will boast a course length of approximately 1,275 miles, and it will be a peninsula run down Mexico’s majestic Baja California peninsula. The race begins in Ensenada, Baja California Norte and finishes in La Paz, Baja California Sur. The race and surrounding festivities will be held next Tuesday through Saturday.
