On a bitter cold December day that barely got out of the twenties, mixed in with blustery winds, rain, sleet, snow, and a little sunshine, the Henderson 250 featured super hot racing for KC Dirt Tribe athletes.

KC-HiLites-Dirt-Tribe-12-30-13The Henderson 250 was the final event on the 2013 Best In The Desert calendar and things really started heating up at the Time Trials on Thursday before the race. KC Dirt Triber Rob MacCachren needed to have a great starting position and an even better race to have even a remote shot at the Trick Truck Championship. On the other hand, fellow Dirt Tribe athlete Jason Voss needed to just finish the race to cap off his incredible year with the Championship. But Jason didn’t hold anything back at qualifying as he grabbed the second starting spot by edging out Rob’s time by a scant .163 of a second. That set the stage for the race with the two drivers starting side-by-side on the second row.

When the flag dropped, MacCachren got the hole-shot on Voss off the line and immediately set his sites on the pole sitter. Near the beginning of lap three, Rob finally chased down and passed the race leader. Once he was out front, he continued his blistering pace, trying to put as many positions as possible between himself and Jason Voss. At the end, MacCachren came in first overall, beating out the second place finisher by just under 40 seconds. Jason Voss managed to come in fifth overall, fourth in class. His finish was good enough to seal up the 2013 Trick Truck Championship. In fact, KC Dirt Tribe athletes took the top three spots in the final Trick Truck standings with Rob MacCachren coming in second and Steve Olliges third.

KC Dirt Tribe athletes also earned several other class victories at the Henderson 250. In the day’s third race, Jeff Horsley captured his first win of the year in Class 7200 and Dr. Macrae Glass won Class 8000. Race number two saw Logan Holladay get the Class 6000 Trophylite win along with Tim Casey taking the victory in Class 8100. Matt Krimple scored the win in the SR1 UTV Class during the first race of the day.

Jason Voss also managed to take home the Camburg “Best In The Desert” Award for having posted the fastest average speed over all the combined race miles for the season. Jason averaged 57.7 MPH across 2,038 miles of rugged desert landscape. Jason relied on the superior lighting provided by his KC-PODs to maintain his speed through the long hours of nighttime driving over the course of the year. Dirt Triber Steve Olliges averaged 53.9 MPH to be the third fastest in the year-end standings.

Several additional KC Dirt Tribe racers capturing 2013 Best In The Desert Class Championships included Bryan Folks in Class 1100. Steve Alexander took his second consecutive Championship in Class 5000. P.J. Guglielmo won the Class 6000 Trophylite Championship. Dr. Macrae Glass took the honors in Class 8000 and Tim Casey once again earned the Class 8100 Championship.

Other notable KC Dirt Tribers fairing well after another hard fought year of competing in “The American Off-Road Racing Series” were Jerry Whelchel driving the Camburg Class 6100 Spec Trick Truck to third place in the final season points tally, along with Shawn Giordano’s third place, Randy Merritt’s fifth place and Jeff Horsley’s sixth place in Class 7200.

It was another banner year for KC HiLiTES and the entire KC Dirt Tribe. Now it’s time to enjoy the holidays and begin preparing for a full assault on the 2014 Best In The Desert race season. It all gets started with the epic BlueWater Resort & Casino Parker 425 as the “Legend Lives On”, January 31st thru February 2nd, 2014.
