BJ Baldwin is entering the 2013 SCORE Baja 1000 as the reigning champion, and he hopes to defend his title at this year’s race. But it’s clear Baldwin is not as prepared as he’d like to be. He’s the first to tell you it’s been a rough few months leading up to the race in his personal life, as he lost his beloved dog Xena whom he truly considered part of the family. It was a devastating blow and one he’s still recovering from.

But being the true professional, Baldwin is ready to tackle this year’s race head on. While many racers have partnered up, such as Bryce Menzies with Jesse Jones, Rob MacCachren with Andy McMillin, Tim Herbst and Larry Roeseler, and so on, Baldwin still plans to tackle the 883.1-mile course solo. It’s going to be long day of racing, but Baldwin is looking forward to the challenge. We chatted with him today just after the SCORE press conference, and below is what he had to say.
