San Felipe, Baja California – In case nobody noticed, Rob MacCachren has been dominating the SCORE Desert Series races held in San Felipe, Mexico. He won both the 250 and the Challenge of Champions races in 2011 and then went Back-to-Back winning the Mastercraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 again in 2012. With three overall victories in as many races, it would appear that Rob and his team would be hard to beat when they return March 8-10 for this year’s race but things have changed. Rob is racing his own brand new Geiser SCORE Trophy Truck and this year’s course has a new layout that has fewer miles of punishing, high speed whoops like in years past.

“We are just doing our homework like we always do,” said Rob MacCachren, “We are running a new Geiser Brother’s SCORE Trophy Truck out of our own shop this year. Jim Blackmore is the crew chief; he and I go all the way back to the Mickey Thompson shortcourse days. Our BFG tires are hooking up and the FOX shocks on our new Rockstar Energy Drink, SCORE Trophy Truck are dialed in; we’re ready to go.

After we fill up on some fish tacos, we’ll do some more prerunning then head back to the shop for some shortcourse testing in Elsinore. Then we head right back down here again for more prerunning before the race. This year’s San Felipe race is not the typical course we usually run. There are more washes, more gotcha’s and more rocks, cactus and trees to watch out for; it isn’t miles of whoops running at 60 mph, it’s much more technical but I don’t see that as drawback for us.”

With Rob Mac on a winning streak and a more technical course ahead of them, it’s not good news for the competition. Defending SCORE Overall and SCORE Trophy Truck season points champion B.J. Baldwin’s truck does very well in the high speed whoops. The new course layout does not play well into his truck’s strengths but he starts third off the line and few question his truck handling skills. “Three wins in a row is pretty impressive,” said B.J. Baldwin, “Rob is a great driver, I looked up to him when I was coming up and I love to compete against him now. He is very good at connecting lines through the washes. Our truck does exceptionally well in the rougher sections. At the Baja 1000 last year, I got past Rob and Bryce Menzies in the San Felipe whoops. I’ve been working with King Shocks on tuning and suspension set-up on my Monster Energy, Toyo Tires, Method Race Wheels SCORE Trophy Truck to handle the worst whoops and big holes.

The course may have changed but it will still have plenty of rough sections where we can make time on everyone else. I love racing in San Felipe because at the end of the day, you really know what the truck is capable of surviving. In order to win, you have to go all out.”

The battle between Rob and B.J. will be one to watch but there are 33 other SCORE Trophy Trucks in the race that will be hell bent to take the win on raceday including Mark Weyrich who starts first off the line. Some say Weyrich is overdue for a win but he will first have to contend with Dan McMillin who starts second and B.J. in third followed by Bryce Menzies and Juan Carlos Lopez; the list of solid contenders just keeps on going.

Every team racing is eager to accumulate points towards a SCORE Championship and to qualify for the World Championship of Desert Racing. To win the World Championship you must run 3 HDRA races in the US, including the mandatory Reno 500 and the three SCORE races in Baja for a total of 6 races. With well over 200 two-wheeled and four-wheeled entries in the race, the competition will be fierce in every class with so much at stake.
