B&M Products, Inc. Hasty Hitch

May. 01, 2000 By Dean Waters
I was recently introduced to a brand new product for the ATV owner. The Hasty Hitch is a device to quickly secure an ATV into the bed of a pick up truck or utility trailer. This product eliminates the need for tie down straps and replaces them with an all steel securing system. I liked the idea of not needing tie down straps and of also being able to lock my quad in the back of the truck so I got in touch with Marion at B&M Products and had him send out a Hasty Hitch for us to try out. It only took a few days to receive the Hasty Hitch. I unboxed it and prepared to install it. It has a very nice powder coat finish and is also Electrocoated to prevent rust inside and out. All that is needed is 4 holes in the bed of the truck but the problem I found is that my Suzuki LT 230 did not have a hitch on it. I called the Suzuki dealer and found I could get one for $27.00 in a couple days. I decided to make one in the mean time. A little time with the Sawzall and a drill and I had a hitch for my LT 230.
With a hitch on my ATV I proceeded to install the base plate in the back of the pickup. The instructions reccomended installing the base plate 8 3/6" to 9 1/8" from the rear of the truck bed. This worked out perfectly and placed the forward set of holes slightly rear of the last reinforcing rib. I lowered the spare tire so that I had enough access to the underside of the truck bed.

Using the base plate as a template I centered it in the bed and drilled 4 13/32" holes through the truck bed. I then had to round up some longer 3/8" bolts since I had a bed liner installed in the truck. With the backing plate under the bed I bolted the base plate down, raised the spare tire, and was ready to try it out.

I loaded up the ATV and with just two pins the Suzuki was secured in place. This will definetly be easier than hasseling with tie down straps. With the ATV mounted towards the rear it is easy to lock it down and leaves plenty of room in the front of the truck bed for gear or a tool box. The head assembly has 7 holes allowing for connection when the ATV is not centered in the truck bed.
With the addition of a MasterLock #1DLJ your ATV will also be locked down. I like the extra security this provides if you leave your ATV in the back of your truck very often. For $139.95, ( not much more than a good set of 4 tie downs ) I would say this is a very nice product that will save many ATV owners alot of time with tie downs. I give it a thumbs up!
