2L-T powered trucks use the W56 and non-turbos use the G52.

I'm in the US and it is an '84 without a turbo, but I will see about

Jim,
Is this referring only to '85 and up? Is the same true for an '84
Diesel 4x4 PU? It is a 2.4L non-Turbo, designated 2L I think. Also,
which tranny is preferable or is it a toss-up?
Boy am I full of questions! :-)

Over here is Australia, some 2L engines come out with 6 volt glow plugs and some
come out with 12 volt glow plugs. Try get an engine with the 12 volt plugs to
make wiring it up a bit easier. Also you can get some fitted with 24 volt
starter motors. Just check these things before you hand over the cash.

Well I answered my own question on this one. The '84 4x4 with the 2L
diesel (no Turbo) has the G52 Tranny, as indicated on the ID plate. A
2wd with a 2L of the same year also has a G52.
I do have a couple of other questions though. First, just for
curiosity, what is the difference between a G52 and a W56?
And second, I have access to a running 2wD diesel (2L) with a G52, and a
worn out 4wd diesel, both '84. Both are beat and ugly. I have been
considering putting the good engine into the 4wd along with all of the
other best parts between the two, and parting out the 2wd. That should
be pretty straight forward, just work.
However, I also would like a 5 speed in my '80 4x4, so I was wondering
what is the difference between the 2wd and 4wd trannys and if it is
possible (or practical) to mate a transfer case to the 2wd tranny to put
it into my '80 4x4? I must admit that I have not looked very close at
the G52 trannys, but my guess is that they are the same box, with a
tail housing and perhaps a longer output shaft on the 2wd.
Sorry for the long boring post, but sometimes ya' just gotta know! :-)

To: Toy4x4@tlca.org
I got no response to this, so I'm sending it again. It seems there
were some A/C-pros out there who might have an opinion. Sorry to
bother you all, but this job really leaves me questioning the whole
idea. It is hot today, and it seems to work OK, but I thought I'd
get more cool out of it, and I've discovered that the existing hot
air control has no effect, it only affects the air going to the
heater vents near the floor and defroster vents, no affect at all on
the air coming out the main vents.
I had the A/C installed. I ended up taking Nick's (and every A/C pro
I talked to) advice and bought a new kit and had it professionally
installed - $675 parts, $300 labor, $55 tax = $1030.
The job looks OK - the wiring is sloppy, the hoses are protected by
flimsy one-sided sticky foam tape (will fall off first time in car
wash). But the compressor is new and well secured, the condenser is
mounted so-so on a couple of sheet metal screws and angle iron. The
drier is mounted on a bracket and securely jammed between the body
and the battery.
I can fix the wiring (already did half of it.) And the hoses I can
reroute and tie down securely. They didn't seem to realize this is
an off-road vehicle. I'll have to look at securing the condenser and
the drier a little better.
They drained the PAG oil from the compressor, and refilled with esther
oil and then charged it with R12. This was due to the small size of
the condenser, and the fact the shop owner thought R134A would not
work well due to the small size. They put the wrong sticker on the
hood, which would have been a mess if I hadn't known to ask the
question. They are sending me a new sticker.
There is no temp control directly on the A/C, he said to use the old
temp control to preheat the air before it goes through the evaporator?
There is a single switch, which in conjunction with the fan switch,
turns on the compressor. There is also a variable resistor with a
thermocouple attached which controls the compressor, he had it on full
cold. (This control is mounted on a jagged-edged bracket at shin height
on the air box and will have to be moved/covered/smoothed.)
The side vents have been ducted to the air box, and the old vent
intakes plugged behind the dash. Now I can use the fan to blow air
through the side vents.
There is no connection to the unused dash pot on the carburetor, which I
thought would be used to increase the idle speed when the compressor
is on.
Does all sound about right? I feel like I've been taken to the cleaners
but I didn't know exactly what to expect, and I've never seen a similar
job.

If it runs hot on the freeway, it is not likely the clutch. Look for a
clogged radiator or even the t-stat. I have seen new vehicles with bad
t-stats run hot...even fairly new 'stats can fail at any time. Takes
less than fifteen minutes to swap a thermostat.
If you can spin the fan freely without resistance and it continues to
spin for some time, it is bad or going bad. The fluid coupling can also
leak, indicating a problem.

In my '86, I was replacing it
on a regular basis. The first time I it ran hot, I had no idea what was
happening, eventually the head gasket, only one of the water ports,
blew. From then on, I replaced the coolant once a year and put in a new
t-stat anytime I saw the temp. rise abnormally. Had no problems since.

Hello List,
Just a quick question on clutch life..
My 1985 Toyota pickup, 22R engine, 4x4, with 132k miles is still running
on its original clutch (or so I am told). All that I notice is that the
clutch pedal has to come way up before it starts to engage. No
problems, no noise, you just have to really let the pedal up before it
start to engage.
Is that normal in a really old clutch?
How long do these clutches last anyway?
Thanks,
Tom

I'm surprised it doesn't shake the truck apart) If I can find a way to

It doesn't hopp much except that I don't have the shocks on back there
yet ;) I'm puttin em' on the front of the axle housing (kinda like
yours) so they might help with axle wrap a tiny bit, (but I don't think
I'm getting much anywho)
How maluble a metal is the center bearing suport, is that Alluminum?

From: Tony Bartlett Subject: installing Ford front shock mounts
To: toy4x4@tlca.org
Anyone out there who has the Ford front shock mounts installed I just
have a couple of questions.
first, I have completed the holes in my inner fender, I cut the original
mount so there is about 1 to 2 inches showing above the frame. I
installed my right mount first and tack welded it on to check
clearances. I went to a local ramp and found out I did not have the
shock far enough inside (tire hit shock on compression). After getting
back to the shop I noticed that my shock mount assembly moved a little
over a half inch until it hit my inner fender. My welds held so I think
mounting the Ford shock mount to what was left of my stock mount did not
have enough support.
Did anyone have to reinforce this setup?
After looking it over I think I will cut the stock mount off and make
some type of bracket so I can bolt the Ford mount to. That way if you
ever have to remove the brake master cylinder it will not be in the way.
I have the bottom of the Ford mounts about even with the top of my
frame. Is this close to anyone elsed setup? The drivers side mount
sits just below the brake master cylinder (had to modify the brake line
for a better fit).
Everything is going good so far. I am just about done with the stuff I
can do myself. Now I have to flag down a friend to help with the
welding (my welding still sucks).
People with a/c will have to modify there a/c lines coming out of the
evaporator so they do not rub against each other.
I planned on taking pictures but got involved with the work I forgot,
sorry.
Tony.

Where out there can one get the front 2 ABS side panels for
4-Runners (1st gen) at a discount? My local dealer is in the $210 range
(EACH) with their "discount" for being a repeat customer! I figured maybe
$100/ea even at extreme prices, but this is well beyond that.
I have a set that have decided to crack in two places (giving me a
total of 3 pieces to "tack" on the sides) so basically almost beyond repair.
Its the only thing on my '88 that's really shot in the interior, so its on
my list.

Well, I am stupid enough to try for the top speed on my 83 22R (carburated)
and what I got with 31" tires 4:10 gears and foot to the floor was 72 mph
adjusting for the greater tire diameter i believe that's approx 78-80 mph.
It took 2 1/2 minutes to get there but... I made it!!!

How did you find out about the Toyota 4x4 Mailing List: The offroad.com web site.
General info about your vehicle, self, etc.:
My 4Runner was built 7/84. At this point, it's pretty much stock, and I'm at the point
where I guess I need to either restore it or move on before it's too ugly to sell.
Fortunately, I've got a friend who works at a Toyota/Volvo dealership (my wife's car
is a Volvo:) so I'm probably going to fix it up. (Turbos and V-6s are a lot more $$$
than something I already own!)
I went to WPI from '91-'95, where I was gregc@wpi.wpi.edu (don't try that address
now!). I was on the offroad mailing list for several years (back in school), and I
developed the original 4Runner FAQ that Eric Johnson took over to offroad.com.
I'm a little rusty on my 4Runner tech (I just got my 'Runner back after a few years),
but I'll try to help out with some of those pesky little questions.

equipped with rear disc brakes. I was taken aback to say the least. It is a
single cab 4 cyl. model with the factory alloy wheels. Has anyone ever
looked into adapting a rear axle off of one of these for conversion to a
toyota frame? I'm going to be doing a rear brake job for him in the near
future and will check it out further.

Multi-Carrier for my 4Runner. Seems like a good deal.
I asked for the top-of-line unit with hitch, D-Rings and a few custom mods - I
want to replace the side plastic 'bumperettes' (for lack of a better word)
behind the rear fenders when I replace the bumper, so I asked them to extend
the bumper around the sides of the truck to the rear fenders....
Total price???? $365 for the bumper + $45 for shipping.....
Damn fine price if I do say so.... I've asked to see a couple of pics of a
Runner with this setup, so hopefully I'll receive something in a few days....

this is to the guy who wants 35" tires on the 90 4runner.
you can get a superlift 4-5" lift. this lift gives 4.75" of lift and will
allow a 35x12.50 on either an 8" or a 10" wheel.
the lift can be purchased for around $699. (front end only)
the rear will add anywhere from $50-$300 depending on how you do it.
this is the least amount of lift and cost that will allow you to run
35's.
-Aaron Bewley
It seems to me if you try to fit 35" tires with only 4.75" of lift that
you are going to have some serious rubber to fender well contact. I have
33's and 4" of lift and I get minor rubbing when I turn the wheels all
the way to the left. You will most likely need 1.25" more lift to fit
35" tires.

To: toy4x4@tlca.org> BTW, I got a Toy with the 2L-T engine (2.4 turbo Diesel), and I was> wondering if you could tell my how much your safari turbo is boosting> under full load?
I'm running around 9 psi of boost at full load. I don't have a boost gauge but
that's the figure my mechanic assured me it was running. The standard Safari
turbo unit for a 2.8 Diesel pushes about 7-8 psi. Don't forget though that I've
had my engine rebuilt, everything balanced, ports matched and minor head work. I
have also fitted a big bore exhaust and a landcruiser airbox for heaps more air
flow. I have been assured by my mechanic that my engine could easily handle up
to 18 psi boost but I can't afford to rebuild it if something went wrong. You
can roughly judge the extra power by remembering (I think) that about 14.5 psi
is 1 atmosphere and for every atmosphere you affectively double the air density
and therefore double the power?? hmmm that sounds sort of right??
My mechanic also had a 2.8 Diesel Turbo running 16 psi boost and he could easily
sit on 160 kph although a little unstable it might be. I've also heard that
intercooling it gives approx another 20% power.
Best of all, I love the whistle when you put the foot down!! Allrrriigghht!!!!!

Is some vibration normal? or is something wrong?
Yes, something is wrong. The 4WD is not meant to be used on dry or wet
pavement. Only use the system offroad or in snow (i.e. lose traction
surfaces) Running the 4WD on bare pavement can and will do serious
damage to your driveline. Use the 4WD off road and you will probably
hear the rumbling sound and feel the vibration go away, and hope that you
have not all ready done damage to your truck!!

Not to be a smart-ass but it would be very wise of you to read your
owners manual. You should not drive any part time 4WD vehicle in 4wd on
dry pavement. Yes you will get vibration when in 4wd there are more
drivetrain parts in use etc etc.

Nah. When I worked for Dinan (BMW/Mercedes hot-rod shop), every single
person there, WITHOUT exception, drove a Toyota pickup. No one owned a BMW
or Mercedes except for me ('57 190SL) and the boss (twin-turbo 633 csi).
If I worked for Toyota (and had to drive a Toyota), the only current US
models that would interest me would be the FJ80 and the Supra Turbo. Now if
I could have ANY current Toyota, I'd have a double-cab diesel Hilux with a
straight axle front, an FJ70, a Mega Cruiser...

I don't have a 460; it is a PowerStroke turbo diesel. Guess I'd need
about 10 22Rs to match the torque. Maybe they'd all fit in the bed???

I am a little unsure of exactly what I will need other than the new hubs and

require a new thrust washer, adjusting nut, lock washer, and lock nut from the
outer bearing out. Is this accurate? Also what is the torque spec for the
bearings if I have to do all that? Is the bearing preload accomplished by the
plate washer torque (13 ft-lb) as mentioned on pg FA-41?
