Ed Herbst's F-150 had 2
days of near flawless racing, posting some of the fastest
lap times of the event. Herbst, the only Trophy Truck to
complete all 10 laps, faced stiff competition on day 2
from Jeff Lewis in the MacPherson Chevy. Lewis was on a
mission, dicing it out with Herbst before the grandstands
and in the desert, but the bad luck that has dogged him
all season reared it's head once again in Laughlin. His
only conselation was in winning the $1000 "Laughlin
Leap", with a distance of 57 feet. While certainly
nothing to scoff at, it was not the victory Team
MacPherson had in mind.Curt LeDuc's troubles began on day one just beyond the infeild, leaving him 1 lap short of a potential victory. The Don-A-Vee Jeep Grand Cherokee completed 9 laps in 1 hr, 57 min., resulting in a second place showing. Third went to Danny Letner, who completed 8 laps in a time of 2 hr, 9 min. Those lost laps may prove to be costly to the desert vetran however, due to the close points race between 2nd, 3rd, and 4th positions. Letner may have lost his 2nd place standing to the victorious Herbst, and we will post an update as soon as the official standings are announced. Perhaps the biggest suprise in the Trophy Truck ranks came once again from Michael Tieman and his S-10 Chevy. The winner of the 97 Fireworks 250 found his fair share of trouble in the Nevada desert, completing only 2 of the 10 laps, and finishing 6th. Lonnie Humbolt with 5 laps completed, finished in the 5th slot, and Tim Lawerence rounded out the feild in 7th. Ivan Stewart and the new Toyota V-8 sat out the Challenge, giving PPI additional time to prep the truck for the all-important Baja 1000. Stewart took advantage of the free time promoting the growing Protruck class that has recently established it's roots in Euroupean rally racing.
