Class 5-1600

The 97 Laughlin Challenge was a shot at redemption for Iribe Racing. The 96 Challenge saw a broken 50 cent key in the steering linkage cost the Iribes' the race (and as it turns out, the 96 championship as well) In 97, there were no such problems, and Class 5-1600 saw an Iribe (Gerardo on saturday, Carlos on sunday) lead from start to finish. Iribe noted "I liked the course, I liked the format, I think SCORE did a really good job. Hey I won, how can I complain"? Carlos' son Humberto rejoined the field, debuting a 5-1600 from ISRT that earned him a 6th overall

Close behind The Iribes in second place was Team Ledezma. Currently leading the points chase, and having more than one victory this season, Danny, Mario and company gave Carlos and Gerardo little breathing room all weekend. A broken pedal assembly costing the Ledezmas 10 min in downtime, and a quickly recovered roll-over, resulted in a finishing time 4 min. 34 seconds behind the winning pace. While their point lead seems secure in light of Guillermo Quintero's (their closest competitor in the point standings) 7th place finish, the Baja 1000 could result in a suprise upset. On the peninsula, anything can (and usually does) happen.

Third place went to Tim Smith, less than 2 min. behind. Smith was the last of the 5-16's to complete all 10 laps. While Smith is not in contention for the Championship, his high finish lessened the hopes of Eric Pavolka, who finished 4th, and was 3rd in points going into the Laughlin event.

Ernie Negrete took the 5th spot, finishing 9 laps in a time of 02:46:47, followed soon after by the 6th place Humberto Iribe. Guillermo Quintero, Steve Miszkiewicz, and Hector Garcia rounded out the finishers with 8 laps each.
