The aftermarket world is attacking the new body style Chevrolets with full focus, and a company called Steel Horse is definitely one of them. With the extreme popularity of the new Chevys, it is at times difficult to seperate yourself from the masses. One obvious new trend is the replacement of the factory grill with a custom billet aluminum one. The Steel Horse billet aluminum grill is a great idea to cap off, or begin the customization of your truck. The installation process is not difficult, but requires a little patience, and the willingness to take a hacksaw to your grill! Follow along to see how we did it:
Open the hood, then use a straight blade screwdriver to pop up and remove the seven plastic fasteners which hold the shown plastic panel in place.
Next, remove the one 10mm bolt in the center of the grill. Now, using a phillips or flathead screwdriver, unlock the four twist-lock fasteners as illustrated.
Now firmly grab the corner of the grill toward the edge. The outer-most part of the grill is secured by means of friction clips. Pull outward, and the edges will pop out with little effort.
Once the grill is completely removed, find a clean bench surface to lay the grill down on (preferably use a towel to protect the chrome).
Time to get out the hacksaw! Basically what needs to be done is to remove the stock grill inserts. Getting in and around where you need to be is somewhat difficult, but work at it, and it shouldn't be too frustrating (this will take some time, but be patient).
Now that the stock grill section is removed, set the new billet grill in place, with a marker within close reach (it may be easier to go ahead and re-install the grill shell on the truck from this point). Center the grill at the bowtie, marking the spot where the mounting holes will need to be drilled.
Using an 1/8"drill bit, drill out the four mounting holes.
Using the provided black screws, bolt up the grill inserts into the stock assembly.
Simply reverse the removal process to install the grill, and you're done!
Its a Billet World We're surprised someone isn't making billet silverware! Deep within the world of "you name it, we create it in billet", there stands the multitude of aftermarket goodies created in that all out trendy billet aluminum. The how does the Steel Horse billet aluminum grill make you stand out in the crowd of thousands of Chevy trucks running around in your area? Chances are, you'll still be the minority! Overall we were all impressed by the sleek, smooth looks of the grill, which compliments the rounded edges of the new body style Silverado. There are numerous different styles of replacement, aftermarket grills out there, and we believe this one contains the classiest look of them all.
The Good The Bad
  • Theres probably thousands of these trucks in your area....look different!
  • Billet aluminum
  • Good welds
  • We thought it could somehow use a support in the center also, instead of just being secured on the sides.
  • Once you start cutting, theres no turning back!
