why do you have to cut the top ear off the diff

I have a 4 inch tuff country lift on my 2003 gmc 3/4 ton and i'm noy=t happy with the way the torsion bars hang down so far that my clearance is not improved, also it looks bad with all of the iron hanging under there, are there any other options for my truck? thanks bob
