Thanks for a very well written & documented explanation on this shifter bushing replacement job. The manual I have isn't worth a damn on this subject. The only trouble was I had already removed the baseplate by removing the four bolts, etc. You're right, it was hard. But no big deal. In any case the job otherwise went just as you described and was very starightforward. I can now get reverse and 5th gear easily, neither of which I could get at all before.

are all vw shift levers in the 1950's the same? I cant find one for mine and as I'm crippled I need one to make it shaped to fit my needs. Thanks

Thanks for the very good description on how to improve the shifting. I just did it to my '94 4runner and the shifting is way better now. The hardest part was getting the boots off the shifters, i ended up having to remove the shift lever with the boot still on. My bushing was fine too, but the seat was completely dissolved with pieces everywhere.

This fix gave me back my 5th gear and reverse on my '89 4Runner V6. The rubber seat had completely disintegrated, with only the black base of the seat remaining. Very easy. I would add that it's important to have the tranny in neutral before removing the shifter. My dealer cost for the parts in May of '08 was about $20. Thanks for a great write-up of this cheap and easy fix!

Just wanted to say a big thanks to you for your article. It was a good read. Saved me some time figuring out how the shifter came apart. I have a 91 Toyota pickup. 3rd and 4th would pop out and very sloppy. The seal was killed. And get this, the little cup bushing was not even there!!! Thanks
