Terminator

November 1, 2005

In early June, Dave King of Asian Auto Parts of Arizona put out the word that he wanted to get several Samurais together and host a Suzuki-only trip up the famous Terminator trail outside of Phoenix, AZ. I had heard many descriptions of Terminator from various people in the past - none of whose tales had been very kind, since it's a 4.5-rated trail - so I knew it would be fun, but since I was the only one in the group from California, I was the focus of plenty of light-hearted jokes.

This is my 1995 Vitara V6. Most of the time my wife drives the car. In the winter we very often go skiing, for which the car is perfect. We love it.

In the beginning I used to jump this a lot, but after a bent front axle and the wheel bearings going bad in both axles, I figured it was time to stop jumping this little thing. The places aI have enjoyed taking the Sami include the Rubicon, Hollister Hills, Clear Creek, Pismo and some other places in the Sierras. My only mods are a 3" National Spring lift, EZ locker, rocker panels and custom bumpers front and rear. Plans are lower gears, lower transfer case, and maybe a larger engine when this one dies.

Engine swap tips

November 1, 2005

I thought Id share my recent experiences with my new engine. Let me first start by saying I have an 88½ Samurai with too many modifications to list. The summer of 95, while on the Rubicon with some friends, I drove through deep water a little too fast. My Mikuni dual side-draft carbs sucked water into the engine and BOOM! Time for a new one since the bent rod blew out a couple of holes in the side of the engine.

I bought my '88½ Samurai 5 years ago. It had 56k miles on it then, now has 130k. Since it's my daily driver, modifications have been slow, but little by little I'm getting there. I have owned many other 4x4's but this Samurai is the best by far.
