Toyota Truck of the Month - Troy Muse and his 1984 Toyota Pickup - Toyota 4x4 @ Off-Road.com

February 1, 2006

Troy Muse loves rock crawling.  He lives just an hour away from the world famous Rubicon Trail and  is a member of the Pirates of the Rubicon club.  He runs the trail several times each summer and can often be found repairing trucks and assisting others on the trail.  Last year I had a chance to meet him and run the Rubicon trail with him. About 5 years ago he started building up his current toy.  Lower gears were his first priority.  At the time there were no bolt on transfer case options. He choose to use a Nissan transfer case divorce mounted behind the stock Toyota case.  The with his long wheel base there was plenty of room for this second case but it made for an unusual front drive shaft.  Troy decided to cut the stock crossmember and install a bearing inside it that allows the drive shaft to pass through it.  Now the front drive shaft goes from the front differential up to a U joint and through the crossmember, then..

Toyota Truck of the Month - Roc Weezle - Toyota 4x4 @ Off-Road.com

February 1, 2006

At first glance, this white Toyota truck looks like a super clean thirteen year old truck with some nice trail mods. However, anyone but the most casual observer soon realizes that this truck is not so ordinary. Monte Hall is the builder and driver of this meticulously fabricated '84 standard bed truck and his custom license plate (1GOIN84) gives some hint to this trucks capability. Monte went right to work pumping up the power by removing the stock 4 banger and installing a '91 vintage 4.3L Chevy V6. The engine is fed by GM throttle body injection and drives a Turbo 350 tranny. The stock axles each hold a Detroit locker and gearing is 4.37:1. Monte also added custom rear disc brakes to help slow the 33" BFG Mud Terrains mounted on Boyd wheels. The truck sits on a 4 inch Trailmaster lift combined with a 1 1/2" body lift. Upgrades to the front axle include a solid stainless steel tie rod, draglink, and torque rod with rod ends (heims). Each of these..

Yes I do know this truck, but I can't tell you how's truck it is because nobody knows anymore. It is registered to one of the Icelandic mountain rescue teams, but only because then no taxes need to be paid of it... The story of this truck is as follows. Few years ago the Reykjavik's ( Reykjavik is the capital of Iceland ) fire department, which also runs the ambulance service with ambulances owned by the Icelandic red cross, felt that they were incapable of reaching people that hurt themselves outside the pavement. The Econolines (2wd and 4wd) were just not capable of getting to these places, and the drivers not dressed, skilled or equipped to deal with such conditions. The Rescue Teams did however have the experience, equipment and skills, but as they are manned by volunteers it takes some 20 minutes to start them. So an agreement was made between the fire department and two of the rescue teams for cooperation. The Rescue Teams would train few people from the fire department and when the call would come,..
