went up to the Jeeper's Jamboree 7/24/97 press day to meet some of the staff from Off-Road.Com and check the vendor fair. I captured my impressions -- remember that these are my *opinions* and do not necessarily represent -- well -- anyone else's opinions. Remember also that these opinions were based ONLY on that Wednesday's press day.

The plan was to show a few guys some trails in the Big Bear Area. Some of the Isuzu folks that I have met recently had mentioned doing some exploring in the mountains. Well I know most of the trails, so I volunteered my services as Trail Boss for the weekend of June 27-28.

I've heard about a relatively bolt-on parts bin exercise that allows widening the track of a Toyota live-axle truck by about three inches. It sounded pretty easy, but I wanted to be sure, myself.

The Amigo was able to take everything I asked of it with ease. I was able to drive over 600 miles in comfort to get to the off-road stuff. The real gnarly stuff that modified 4x4's take was not even attempted. I have no doubt that with more ground clearance the Amigo would have no problem. This is one fine vehicle!

Okay...so I got these 34x9.50 Super Swampers on my rig. So on the way home from work I decide to test them on some dirt. So, near my house there's a road I hadn't explored yet...

The torsion bars on Isuzu's pre-'92 Troopers are not terribly firm. Many trucks sag or wallow under rough driving conditions. Some older Troopers look like their front ends have been lowered for drag racing!
