Listers,
First, thanks to all that sent get well wishes for my wife. Barbara came
home from the hospital Saturday afternoon but is still quite sick. She
will get over this bronchitis thing but it looks like it will take a couple
more weeks.
I haven't been able to check on the list very regularly and have been doing
admins every 2 or 3 days. It looks like there was a hiccup over the
weekend but the digest is ok now. I may be in this mode for the rest of
the week so don't run amok and try to keep the list subject matter on Land
Cruisers. I've looked at some list mail a couple of times and there has
been a lot of off-subject posts. I may have to deputize the List Monitor,
Bruce Loewen, if you get out of hand
.
After this weekend I hope to have the Bjork household back to semi-normal
(hmmm, this looks like laundry soap) and will get caught up on
correspondence. If you have sent me private mail and I haven't gotten back
to you yet, be patient, I will respond.
Keep the Rubber Side Down,

The bolt pattern to mate the T/C to the tranny is different. Also the
earlier tranny doesn't have provision for the crossmember that the FJ60
uses to suport the back end of the engine/tranny/transfercase assembly.
Anyway... No. it can't, and yes there are.

Hi gearheads,
I am attaching a 3spd t-case to a 4spd tranny. Are there any parts needed to mate the two other than the 16 spline gear on the transmission output shaft and output bearing? Anyone know of a good (cheap) source for the bearing and gear? Part numbers would be appreciated. I understand that this was stock in '74, is Toyota the only place to get this special gear? Thanks in advance.

Not to question the keeper of DGTLB, but last time I visited family in
South Africa (1996), I was on my foreign (ie non US) Land Cruiser photo
quest. For the month I was there, all I did was hunt down Cruisers and
take pictures, and drool (of course, this probably sounds like something
we all do visiting exotic places, right? :-).) One of the cruisers I saw
was a LEAF SPRUNG *J7* four door. Not a troopie, not the custom African
four door lengthened Safari vehicle, but a factory four door 75. I am
not sure if it was a model available in RSA, but I have the photo that
shows it was there (not a very good one though, cause it was New Years
Eve blah blah blah)

Unless of Japanese origin, it did not have either 1HZ or 1PZ,
but one
of the light duty series engines 2L-T-II [LJ-77], 2L-TE [LJ-78],
3L
[LJ-79] or 1KZ-T(E) [KZJ-77), as well as the Prado/Hilux/4Runner
running gear, including coil springs on all 4. These were quite
common in various Asian markets I believe, but only a few came
to
Europe in their last years of production, through grey imports
from
Gibraltar.
I could only have been an HZJ-77 or PZJ-77 if it had leaf
springs and the
knobby indicator lights on the fenders (instead of integrated
next to
the headlights) and AFAIK that model never saw foot outside
Japan....a friend, specialized in TLC imports/exports, never
managed
to find them in any Toyota order document.
I do have a picture of such a Japan-only beast featuring an OME
suspension set....and that's the *only* one I have ever seen (I
think
Ian Staines copied that one to his homepage).

just an F. If needed, I will need it to have the bosses on the right

I have recently converted to this order, at age 21. My dad is a strict
believer in cheap-is-best (can we say Pep Boys Oil and Filters), and he
brought me up in his image. I have recently seen the light though,
especially after watching him replace the remanufactured alternator
THREE times in a year in his FJ80. The time, effort, and labor involved
(although he does the work himself) would have been enough to pay for
the genuine Toyota (Nipendenso?) part by now!

Given that an electric or hydraulic winch is expensive - but not that
expensive. I recently installed a Ramsey 9000 Pro Plus for less than $750
(that's the winch, 12' remote, roller fairlead, 95' of cable, mounting
channel, complete wiring, and shipping). Now I already had an Optima
battery to hook up to, but any decent battery will do (there have been many
posts indicating people are using generic or even blemished batterys for
their winch equiped Cruiser).
Check out the More Power Puller - $129 (including shipping in the US) -

Yes thanks Andy. I also purchased one of these radiators last
summer, but fortunately all it cost me was a second 60 mile round-
trip drive to MAF to return it once I confirmed my radiator guy could
build me the same thing (and for less $$). And at *much* higher
quality. The MAF radiator I got had all the extras mentioned
earlier.
I *strongly* recommend that *nobody* *ever* buy a radiator from MAF.
They are junk. Personally, after the way I was treated by the
owner's wife, I will never buy *anything* from them again. YMMV.

My experiences: I called the Dec. 4 to order 2 heat riser gaskets
and a bellhousing boot. They made me fill out a seperate form for
"foreign customers" even though I live in Puerto Rico (never in 3+ yrs.
have I seen that) which delayed the order a few more days.
The boot arrived after ^^ 2 wks. minus the heat riser gaskets- no
mention of any back order, etc. I called them- they have avoice mail
system which makes it impossible to get anyone on the line. Keep in mind
I'm calling from PR. They act like I'm lying about the gaskets missing
and finally decide that they're back ordered from Toyota. The boot is an
exact MINIATURE of the on needed. Called Specter and they sent out the
CORRECT part in 3 days. Meanwhile I wait over a month untill the heat
riser gaskets come in.
When I call TPI or Specter (or do 'net orders), they know if the
parts are in stock, and I haven't had any problems- I don't get that
from MAF. I can't think of any reason to order from them after my
experience. Just my $.02.
Thanks Jim for the deal on the jack. It came a few days ago.

My similar experience wrt Man A Fre: a box broke open in UPS transport,
and was taped back up with nifty clear tape. I signed before I noticed.
Man A Fre acted like I was trying to get the missing parts twice while
paying once. Luckily the parts were nothing I NEEDED to drive the truck.
The UPS settlement took 6 weeks, and Man A Fre never budged, refused to
intervene with UPS or help in any way, in spite of being asked. Man A
Fre seemed sure I was trying to soak them/UPS for free parts.
That happened about 1984, regarding about $170.00 worth of parts for my
77 FJ40. 3 FJ-45's and one body off renovation later (with lots of
Specter and Sterling McCall orders later, including some pending with
each as I type) .. and never another dime has gone to Man A Fre.
Specter, in my experience has seemed really slow, but they make
adjustments when needed, have accepted a return or two ... and when the
dust for any situation has settled, they've done what it's taken ... and
treated me as though they believed I am an honest person in the
meantime.
And .. Scott Tate @ Sterling McCall is great.

I had the same problem on both of the cruisers I have owned. If you can get
the sleaves out without damaging the "Bellcrank brackets", the best bet is
to put the arm back in without any sleave, or take up the slop with some
appropriate stainless or plastic washers. Greace the pivot point and be
done with it. I am running mine with no shims of any type and it works
great. Be careful when removing the sleaves as the bellcrank material is
cast and can break more easily that one might expect.
BTW I bought brand new brackets and they no longer come with sleeves nor
can you get sleeves for them. The new brackets still have the casting to
accomodate the sleeves but I suspect they caused many headaches so they were
pulled out of all replacements.

what rotor did you use that had to be ground / machined? Did you not use
an adapter / instalation plate to connect the calipers to the rotor? Did
you use Hilux / truck front rotors on the rear - and had them machined?
Need some information on your rotors used as this time I would like to get
the rotors for the rear cheaper than kit form, for my '55.

Exactly what I did was to tacke the acetylene / oxygen torch and cut those
backing plates off (save the wheel cylinders, etc... for future cruisers)

I,ve drug a few around. Generally not more than about 300 feet through the
woods, and then up to a quatermile down the dirt road. I wouldn't bother
cutting it up unless it is a BIG tree. I have drug 20-30 foot birch trees with
base diameters of about 18 inches, in pairs. No big deal. You don't need any
fancy rigging. Just a choker chain, and a short piece of tow strap. Toss the
chain around the end of the tree (or trees), and set the strap short (about 4-6
feet works fine). hook it to your tow hitch. When the rig pulls forward, it
will lift the front end of the logs a little. They may catch and dig in a
little at times, but it's not a problem.

Subject: tire carriers
To: "'TLCA List'"
It is really up to the individual. I know guys who have 36" swamper
SX's on the stock spare tire carrier and have driven up and down the
trails at Tellico with this setup. On the other hand, last time at GSTR,
I saw a Canadian BJ42 with no spare tire carrier and nice matching
holes! Why....he ripped the carrier off (with a 31" on it) on the same
trails in Tellico. Personally, I have my spare on the stock carrier, but
I also have the added reinforcement of diamond M-< panels. If I had enough
$$, I would mount it to the frame via a custom bumper. (I think MAF
makes a bumper/cooler rack/tire combo for +/- $800). HTH

Hey all you 35+ inch tire users
What do you use to hang on to your spare tire? Is the stock
carrier
strong enough? I don't want to hang my tire on there and then
have half
of my rear fender ripped off the first time down the trail.

I think you have to remove the manifolds to get to that gasket. When I
did an intake/exhaust R and R, I had a huge problem trying to place the
exhaust manifold back on the two studs on the block, while lining up the
bolts from the EGR cooler pipe. Took me about an hour, end ended with
lots of swearing, a bear/think break, and my finally my solution, a
BFH. I investigated removing the EGR cooler, but the bolts were all old
(1978 FJ40-can we say road grime!), and very inaccessible, as the
steering box and it's heat shield were in the way. I am sure the experts
can give you better advice. To try pinpoint the leak, get someone to
place his shoe over the tailpipe while the truck is running, and then
see if you can identify the problem spot. YMMV HTH

My new Fj60 is making leaps and bounds toward being perfect. My
thanks
to those that advised on my sputtering problem, disconnecting
the egr
vacum actuating hose, disabling the egr, proved to be the
solution...
but...the exhasut leak is still plaguing me. My new theory is
the gasket
from the exhast manifold to the egr pipe...
- is this a hard gasket to replace...anything I should know?

The differences in the throttle linkage are inconsequential. The difference
in the air cleaner assembly is practically so. The '78 ands '79 unit has a
fitting for the distributor suction line. That is about it.
I should have both of these items, specifically for the '78 model on hand.
I'll check and see.
