![]() JET Chip PerformanceI stopped by the JET Performance shop in Huntington Beach, California for a tour of their facility, and to update the fuel and spark curves to gain the most possible power for my truck. This is NOT something you could do at home, so don't think of this as another install guide. You can, however, send your vehicle's computer off to be modified and reinstall it in the vehicle after it is modified. If you have done ANY work to your engine, such as custom exhaust or a free-flow air filter, then this is an upgrade you must have. The stock fuel and spark curves just don't apply as well to your engine as well after performance modifications. JET reports the following increase in horsepower measured at the wheels:
![]() Getting Down to BusinessThe JET facilities are some of the cleanest and nicest I have ever had the good fortune of visiting. They have an on-site chassis dynamometer that had me drooling. I was eyeing the dyno, but time constraints prohibited me from making a serious inquiry about using it.![]() Removing the ComputerIn the picture to the right, one of JET's technicians is removing my Rodeo's computer. All American models of the Isuzu truck line have their computers located under the dash on the driver's side. Most are located just behind the plastic kick panel on on the inside wall of the footwell of the truck. It took the experienced
JET technician a good 15 minutes just to get the computer out --
and he had all the correct tools and had worked on this make of
truck before! The Brains of my TruckThis little computer box is the brains behind the engine. The dealer charges more than a thousand dollars for replacement computers so be careful with this little metal box! The computer that resides within controls the fuel to air ratio, spark advance curves, and a host of other miscellaneous sensors. An access plate on the bottom of the computer allows you to access the circuit board to remove the main chip for reprogramming.![]() Getting it ReadyI want to say a special thanks to Bryant, the engineer, for letting me sit in on this.In the picture, Bryant has removed the core chip from my computer board, and must now de-solder the actual EPROM from its adapter. While the adapter clips on to the board, the EPROM is soldered in place. Bryant spent almost an hour de-soldering the chip. This was actually the longest step in the process. Once the chip has been removed, Bryant cleaned up the
edges, and made sure the ZZZZZAAAAAAPPPPPP!!!Now it was just a matter of popping the chip into their EPROM interface, loading a profile, and hitting a button. ZAP!!! JET thoroughly tests the chip's integrity first. If there are any problems, they keep hundreds of stock computer chips on hand, and can replace a defective chip with little hassle.Once this was done, Bryant plugged everything back together, connected it to my Rodeo, and started it up. If there were ANY problems, the car would not start. Bryant likes to do this as quality check before he solders the chip back in. Bryant finishes the job by applying a little solder to the connectors, just to make sure everything is good and tight, before he screws it all back together. Outside, the tech installs the computer, and the whole job is complete. If you have any chip work that you would like done, I highly recommend JET performance. Just give them a call, I bet they can modify the computer in YOUR truck.
