After shopping around for a good deal on the K&N filter system, I could not find an intake solution for less than $240.00.
Instead of trying to make my own system. I decided to improvise. First. I installed a stock K&N filter, then I cut some holes in my stock air box ( a total of three) two in the front, and one on the left side. I figure this mod has increased the air flow over 300%, and my gas mileage and performance has increased noticeably. Oh yeah, it's probably a good idea to install a pre-filter behind the new airbox holes. I got mine from the local air conditioner supplier. It's a lifetime washable filter used for commercial air conditioners.
TOTAL COST: new filter $40.00 + pre filter $15.00 = $55.00
EDITORS NOTE: While this is a slick (and cheap) way to improve air flow for MUCH less money than the K&N system, it also suffers from the same short fall as the K&N system....the risk of getting water through your intake goes up significantly.
If you 4 wheel in wet or muddy conditions this cheap trick is probably not a wise addition to your truck
