Making your own dirt cheap exhaustToyota Land Cruiser

Well after driving for a while, my exhaust was always loud, and the fumes would come into the cab all the time. I couldn’t stand it. So, I gave my friends at summit racing a call. And in 4 days, I had two new shinny 40 series flowmasters. Summits service is top notch, and is super quick. (yea, I know, this was not cheap, but I wanted something nice)

So, with these in my hand I went down to the local muffler shop. To my horror they wanted to charge me $150 to install it. I felt this was way over priced, as my old 84 toy, I had a full exhaust with flowmaster installed for $180.

So, after leaving the local shop, I stopped by pep boys to see if they had any prebent tubing. And sure enough, they did.

My shopping list was;

So, after leaving the local shop, I stopped by pep boys to see if they had any prebent tubing. And sure enough, they did.

My shopping list was:

2 45deg bends

2 90deg bends

2 straight pieces

I began by removing the stock set up. My FJ40 has a 327 swapped in, with over the frame headers, and the exhaust exiting in front of the tires. (this is why I thought the muffler shop was over priced, there is not much tubing or work involved)  As you can see, the stock exhaust was in bad shape, and did not even match.

So, I began by taking some measurements of what length I needed. I basically copied the stock setup. I reused the header collector and welded my pipe directly to it. With that connected I mocked up the rest of the exhaust.

Once I had everything where I wanted, I tacked weeded it together. once tack welded, I pulled it back off the truck, and fully welded it.

Here are the completed pictures. they hang down about as low as the stock set up, and should work for me for a while. once I get back into rock crawling, I will have something else done. I want to wait till I am finished with everything before I have a custom one bent up.
