Project Samurai Linkage Steering

Source: Suzuki/Geo at Off-Road.com
Project Samurai continues to evolve into a dominant off-road vehicle. So far we have installed the Calmini two inch shackle reversal, a 1600 Sidekick motor upgrade, and the power steering system.

This month we will be observing the installation of the Steering Linkage kit.

Any time a suspension system is altered it will have an effect on how the truck handles, both on and off road. During the planning stage of your Suzuki modifications you no doubt came across some suspension terms as they apply to solid axle lift kits.

Since changes to the steering components and geometry are going to be made at some point in this project this series has been expanded. Several terms that are associated with the suspension system are being linked to this segment. These terms can be found in Suzuki technical section.

This same terminology frequently appears as a topic of discussion on the Suzuki mailing list.

Parts included in kit:
  • Idler arm with back plate
  • 4 - bolts with nylock nuts
  • Cotter pins
  • Long rod (tie rod)
  • Medium rod (idler to tie rod)
  • Short rod (pitman arm to idler)
  • 6 tie rod ends

Tools and Parts:

  • Tie rod end removal tool (puller or pickle fork)
  • Torque wrench
  • Hand tools
  • Tape measure (setting toe)

Next month:
Many times the Suzuki Samurai is modified in several stages. This facilitates using up the last of the tread life of those new 29 inch tires that you installed with the two inches of lift obtained from the shackle reversal.

In typical off-roader fashion you have decided to "Go Large". Its time for 31's.

The shackle reversal lends itself to this process. It is expandable. The Five Inch Suspension Combo Kit is ready to be bolted on.

Linkage Kit InstallationPart Number SS1582
Stand
Lift the front of the Samurai and support the frame on jack stands, relieving the stress on the front axle. Remove the plastic front splash shield.
Steering Knuckle
Remove the cotter pins from both outer front tie rod ends and the connection at the pitman arm. Using the proper tools remove the tie rod ends and the factory steering from   the Samurai.
Completed Kit

This kit works extremely well with the bolt in power steering kit.

Locate the idler arm assembly with the (4) bolts and backing plate that are supplied. Bolt this to the passenger side of the frame rail with the arm straight up and down. Mount the arm with the edge of the base plate up against the radiator frame mount bracket.

Install the shortest rod from the pitman arm to the top hole on the idler arm leaving the tie rod adjustment loose at this time. Make sure the tie rod is installed with the nut facing forward.

Tie Rod
Install the longest rod to the steering knuckles with the flat tie rod mounting plate to the driver side of the samurai, leave this loose as well. Make sure the larger side of the tapered hole in the flat plate is facing forward.
slidler.jpg (17891 bytes)
Install the last linkage piece from the idler arm to the flat piece on the longest rod, depending how much lift you have will determine which hole on the idler arm you will use. 2" lift will use the top hole, 3 inch lift will use the middle hole, and 4" or more and you will use the bottom hole.
Setting Toe
With the steering wheel straight set the toe of the front wheels. Toe is set at 2-6mm.
Hardware
Tighten the entire steering linkage kit including tie rod ends and cotter pins. The plastic front lower splash shield can now be reinstalled with some minor trimming.
Completed Results
When these instructions are followed precisely you will find the installation of your steering linkage to be relatively simple.
