Building on what was good and leaving behind what wasn't, two more films were produced, each one creeping closer to perfect. Things lead to things, staff flipped and moved on. It lead to Jeremy Parriott and Kelen Higton and "Reliance", what they call " the first step in the new direction." This time, we won't be so cruel in our review... in fact, we loved it. The video kicks off in a
strangely creative way, with bagpipes blasting a surprisingly good
version of Amazing Grace, and fly-over vistas of red rock canyons.
Then for nearly an hour, you are overwhelmed with mostly rock
crawling adventures, but also dune buggies at Glamis, a little bit
of desert racing, some loonies in Jeeps in the trees, and one lone
motorcycle, hopping the hood of a rock crawler. This film never gives you a chance to get bored, yet is not so fast and loud that you feel like you are on a bad acid trip. Each scene is edited carefully, sometimes allowed to play out in slow motion, sometimes in real-time or sped up. Music changes constantly. Some of our favorite scenes have no music at all, accompanied only by the creak of a frame or the scraping of metal on rock. The only narration is a single scene introducing you to a "south of the border chihuahua" - a stange mongrel that seems to protect the Avalanche Ranch OHV park. Another favorite scene is "Dave" rolling his Jeep in the
woods - falling out, and chasing it down the hill. (Wonder how many
scenes they had to edit when some moron ended up with a severed
limb?) There are plenty of crashes, crunches, oops and almosts. But
also just as many "how did he DO that?!" where near vertical
ascents are successful. Watch for the 65-foot-tall climb, that tops
out at an 85 degree angle. And they make it.
We thank them for including chicks - with their clothes on! REAL off-road chicks, with messy hair, sweatshirts - and able to drive too. Check out their web site - you'll get a great insight on the minds behind "Reliance," and BFE Films. "Any jackass can get tanked on cheap booze and do
acts of insanity. But a true warrior doesn’t need that edge
to push it. You need skill combined with equipment in order to
conquer. You will succeed or pay the price. During the act it is
all up to you. Adrenalin-driven-fear feeds your desire to overcome
anything in your path. That is the feeling of being
Clutched."
