Toyota Land Cruisers are
known for their rugged durability and outstanding off road performance.
As we modify them with V8 engines, granny gear transmissions, larger
tires and lockers to tackle more difficult terrain, we put added stress
and strain on the drive train components. One of the major
weaknesses of Land Cruisers (other than Birfields and pinions) is the
cast aluminum transfer case. Many of the early transfer cases were
made from a brittle aluminum material and did not have many gussets or
reinforcing webbing. These transfer cases are notorious for
developing stress cracks and eventually cracking in half!
This
is what happens to a Land Cruiser transfer case when it simply can't
take the stress anymore. It shears in half and hangs there
by the speedo cable leaving the rig inoperable. After one of Don's
friends had cracked his transfer case in half, Don began thinking of a
way to strengthen the transfer case. What he ended up with was the
T-Case Saver: a cheap, simple and effective bracket to
strengthen the weakest part of the transfer case.
Each
T-Case Saver bracket is supplied with 5 lock washers and 5 longer bolts
which replace the factory ones on the transfer case cover. You
do not have to remove the transfer case to install this bracket.
Installation of the T-Case Saver is really easy and only takes about 30
minutes. You can either install it from above (by removing the
transmission cover) or below (a little more difficult, but quicker).
Simply
remove 5 of the top cover bolts from the transfer case and one of the
transfer case - transmission mounting bolts. Place the T-Case
Saver bracket on top of the transfer case and install the lock washers
and longer bolts. Reinstall the transfer case - transmission
mounting bolt through the bracket. That's it! You have just
added more strength and rigidity to your Toyota Land Cruiser's transfer
case.
