Apex 8 Hybrid Truck Camper - 6 Month Follow Up

Camper's Headquarters

">You may find this surprising - I sold the Outfitter camper that was the subject of this test. The best part is that the Outfitter company stood behind the product and went the extra mile.

My original goals was to create a highly mobile camping platform with all the bells and whistles of a conventional camper yet with the extreme off-road ability offered by the suspension modifications on the "Great White" Ford F-350 truck. The camper definitely had all the features however once loaded with all our gear, water and food the combined weight could not be balanced on the long travel suspension of my truck.

With that crisis, I was faced with a decision. 1) Live with the reduced off-road capabilities permanently or, 2) abandon the idea of a fully self contained camper on my extreme off-road truck. I chose the later. Great White is a phenomena vehicle, we have pre-run a few races, taxied some auto manufacture big-wigs down sections of the Baja 1000 course and beat most of the quads to Bay of LA in the 2002 Baja Express run. I just couldn't bare to see this capability diminished.

So, after just three months of having the camper in my possession it went back to Outfitter's lot for a complete update where it remained and was sold shortly thereafter.

Would I buy another one? YES! However, only if I had a stock truck. The weight of the camper loaded or not does not hinder the capabilities of stock suspension on any truck.

Another huge reason why I'd patronize Outfitter again is because of their dedication to the customer. My camper had initial problems with the microwave oven, the accompanying AC/DC inverter and a shower drain alignment issue that left puddles. Outfitter directed me to a local RV maintenance facility where every issue was handled. Consider that this was an expensive endeavor for Outfitter and that they never hesitated to do the right thing.

I sincerely wish that I could have made the suspension work with the camper, it would have been great to tool up through the notorious Matomi Wash in Baja with all the comforts of home while all my fellow off-roaders and campers are roughing it. Ah.., such is the dream. Unfortunately dreams don't always work in reality.

Please feel free to email me with any question. See you on the trail.

In Patrick Chicas article of Sep 1 2003, there was mention of: The camper definitely had all the features however once loaded with all our gear, water and food the combined weight could not be balanced on the long travel suspension of my truck. I am also looking to put a camper on my lifted truck. You did mention using it on Baja 1, but what exactly didn't balance? Can Patrick please elaborate? Thanks, Rob
