Umm.. The '96 catalog I believe. Two FJ80's on the front, a smaller pic of a
red 40, and some 80's on the back. I have no other....>Henry>>PS: What about Specter?
Specter it seems is perfectly happy with STOCK Toyota parts. They don't sell
V8 kits or anything, and not even saginaw kits for FJ40s. I'd doubt they
have anything that Toyota wouldn't put on Land Cruisers....

Nope, all trims, Standard/GX/VX/Sahara, can be had in both full time
and part time 4wd (Standard-full time, even TD's, are available in
Austria, Belgium and Iceland at least; Sahara-part time is available
in the Gulf states (not sure whether they call it Sahara or not, but
with twin-airco's and a fridge I would love to have this trim!).
A mechanical PTO on a full time 80 has been spotted down under in
mining industry (after which it was also discovered that ARB made a
bar for it), and in France (where I spotted the most factory winched
80's) they only have full time systems AFAIK (same in Belgium,
 Holland, Switzerland, Germany and Austria).

How did you find out about the Land Cruiser Mailing List: just sort of
 popped up in my e-mail
General info about your vehicle, self, etc.: I bought my Land Cruiser four
years ago for the sum of $850.00. It was totally trashed. The tub was
trashed, the frame cracked, the motor spun a bearing, the tranny jumped out
of 2nd gear, one out of the eight wheel cylinders worked but leaked, the
35 BFG's had torn holes in the fenders and ripped the tie rod ends to bits
and not one light worked, most were MIA. The body was so filled with mud,
sticks and leaves that I had to use a shovel to get to the floor. The good
news; the windshield frame with the crank vent and the heavy duty radiator
were still intact. So thats what I started with.
After many moons and lots and lots of work and money I have been driving
it daily for three and half years. A partial list of improvements over the
last four years: 16 gauge hand built body tub, fully cased frame w/ added
cross members, dual batteries, chevy alternator, added a 4 speed, rebuilt
the original engine three years ago, yes I drove for six months with a
thump in the lower end, I was poor, weber carb, four tube header, Mallory
distributer, Jacobs, shackle reversal ( not what its cracked up to be),
2.5" rear springs hanging from custom shackles and shackle mounts, 36"
Buckshot radials, Auburn Gear LSD in front, ARB in the rear, power
steering, and a Ramsey after market PTO winch and drive dating back to
1965. All this not to mention the brakes, steering components, electrical
 work and cosmetics.
Sorry about the length, but as I stated, this is a daily driver, it
does go off road often, and has never let me down.

Hmm.. You should check the pushrod length. If the rod is adjusted too long,
it will be pushing on the piston in the m/c before you push the pedal. You
should be able to put the m/c on the booster without it touching the
pushrod at all. If there is any resistance as you place it on the four bolts,
that will be an obvious clue to reduce the length. Adjustment for the rod is
accomplished by slipping it out of the booster and spinning the capnut
inward. I beleive clearance is supposed to be something like 6mm, but you
 could consult a haynes manual or something.>> Thanks>> Ranjan Buell> srbuell@eureka.lk> Scott

Most places in the Chicago area, diesel is a few pennies MORE expensive
than regular unleaded. I'm not sure if its local, state or federal, but
the total tax per gallon approaches 50 cents. That's almost 40% of the
total fuel cost. In addition, the local stations and the refineries are
making big, big profits on diesel.
5-10 years ago, there was a 20%-30% savings per gallon between diesel
and gasoline. The refining costs for diesel haven't changed in relation
to gasoline, so I assume the price difference goes into the profit
pocket. Take the same gallon of Diesel, tag it for agriculture use or
heating oil and you can get it for less than a dollar a gallon.
Between taxes and price gouging, diesel ain't the deal it used to be. Of
course, you still can't beat that 23mpg I get from my diesel Land
Cruiser. Ow, ow, ow...quit smacking me with that 2F motor.

 The place is called Tag-a-Long Expeditions(used to be T-a-L Tours)and yes I
worked there a few years ago but I still keep in touch. it is located on
 the main drag.
the rigs you saw may or may not have been in service. it depends on the time
of year. if it wasn't tourist season the most of the rigs are taken off the
road ti save on insurance. thre used to be about 15 FJ55's but they sold
all of the pre 76 models. the remaining 7-10 rigs are slowly being retored
as they have recieved TONS of abuse. they are being painted all white with
aluminum panels to protect all of the lower sheet metal. The company has
also started to use 4x4 converted vans and a couple of suberbans for the
easier trails as they increase the guide/passenger ratio thus lowering costs
and increasing profits. a few years ago they were considering dumping all
of the cruisers for subs. but I convinced him that half of the appeal of the
tour was to be able to go out in a rig that had that exotic expedition look
to it. (you know someting you see in those PBS shows about africa) most of
our business(85%) was european tourists anyway and they were more familiar
 with TLCs.

Don't rule out a bad vacuum pump, after you consumed all vacuum by
braking just before engaging. Not sure if the test is identical for
all vehicles, pumps and vacuum-tank sizes, but I believe it should
manage 4 full brake compressions while idling.
Btw, the Nippondenso alternator catalog also showed parts for
rebuilding some Toyota vacuum pumps. Not for the 2H and later diesel
engines, nor for 24V systems though. Anyone ever done a pump rebuild
 on those?

I want to see them in real life.
I am haunted by the memory of seeing some kind of older LC wagon, grey, bench
seats front and back, std., quite a bit lower center of gravity than my 62.
(That's one of the most attractive parts to me.) Pristine condition,
and it was before I ever owned my LC (or even considered an LC). I wish
that I knew what this vehicle was. Maybe I'd even like to buy it! If I
had been thinking, I would have left a note on the windshield.
 Could it be a 60, a 55, a 40? I just don't know; from the pictures
at various web sites/books, it's quite hard to tell. For some reason,
I suspect it to be a 55, but unsure.
Does anybody who lives near Pittsburgh, PA own the wagon version of one
of these models? I'd really appreciate the chance to visit and learn.

To apply, thou must take a full diesel drum, drench thy head in it,
and refrain from washing for the time of 1 (one) week. Thou also must
take a sniff of fresh diesel each night for the time of 1 (one)
month, to be lessened to once a week thereafter, for as long as thou
 lives.
Thou also must put diesel drums in your local church, and ask the
priest to ignite some diesel-oil candles on St. Rudolph's birthday
(March 18th (Paris 1858)). Memorial day will be September 30th, as he
died on that day in 1913, being swept overboard from a boat on the
North Sea. Some claim he committed suicide after long financial
twists about patents and licenses. To put his ever wandering soul at
rest, thou must therefore strive to increase the popularity of the
diesel engine during thy remaining life, by showing all sinful
gasoline users the benefits of Rudolph's majestic invention.
Perhaps a little background on this is appropriate:
During my tour of duty in the Dutch army, I was assigned as
driver/medic on a light track. Of course it was a diesel (a Detroit
5.9L TD (Cummins?)), and I was happily submerged in diesel fumes for
my entire period (everything better than the medical smell of ether).
During one of the more thrilling long distance training sessions, we
had to load the vehicle up with diesel in a very short time. The tank
openings are almost on top of the vehicle, about 2m above the
ground, and we had to use a stack load of jerrycan's to fill it up.
Due to circumstances not worth expanding on, many a liter of diesel
did not go into the tank opening, but into the sleeve of my
tank-overall. Needless to say that I spend a very happy next week,
hallucinating from diesel fumes (it was too darn cold to ditch the
 tank-overall).
One of my buddies had a similar happy experience, after a fuel line
inside the track bursted, and drenched his down sleeping bag.
He had very prosperous dreams he claimed (I resisted sharing his
 sleeping bag though).
All in all it was a very happy exercise. Everyone smiled, with a
 dizzy glaze in his eyes....8-))
Did I mention we had diesel furnaces/heaters in those things?
For one reason or another, these things smell quite different during
ignition and turn-off. Only a distinction the real gourmet
appreciates I guess. A must-smell experience for disciples of St.

 It's possible he's running a heavy oil; straight 40 or straight 50.
It's also possible that his valvetrain is way too tight (no lash,
which is where you get the noise).

Yes, you can stick weld vinyl. If you mean rod and torch when you say
 stick.
Of course, you don't use a torch, you use a heat gun. And, you must be
very careful, for if the vinyl ignites, it gives off toxic fumes. Two
sheets are buuted together, a thin strip is laid between, all are
heated, a hard plastic sheet with the desire pebble pattern is laid in
place and pressure applied. Voila, welded vinyl, and you don't even need
 bondo.

No. The LCAH kit only works on the 40,43,45 AFAIK. I asked about the 55 too,

Ask your Toyota dealer. Seriously, I'd be surprised if you could get
your hands on the operating software for the CD system. It's one of
those corporate security psychosis things. Like a competitor really

If someone gets a hold, or already has, those CD's.... I have access to a
couple of CD burners... at the cost of $6 a blank........ and I could add

 I transported a good-sized Ford 9N tractor in the smallest U-Haul

diesel truck you can (better on fuel, unless you're driving through
uneducated areas where diesel is expensive).

Last nite after posting I called Uhaul to get a price on how much the truck
rental would be. I was shocked. To go from South Dakota to North Carolina
 they quoted $1024 for a 26 footer, $893 for a 24 footer, and $842 for a 17
footer. Some of the Transporters I have called have been less than that.
So I guess I'll scrap the U-haul thought.
Now the second idea I have come up with is this; I'll go up there get the
Classifieds, buy an older 3/4 ton or 1 ton truck. Use it to pull it home
and then sell it when I get back home for what I paid for it or maybe more.
This would all depend upon getting a good deal on a truck.
 Thanks

I don't know if you have Ryder truck rental in the US but when I rented my
19 footer to move to the east coast the total cost of the rental and
mileage for the 1200 mile trip was under $700.00 CDN and the diesel truck
only used about $100 in fuel.

 Two pieces of advice.
 1. Forget U-Haul. They're the most expensive of the bunch and they lie
about truck length. That goofy little space above the cab counts for 2
feet, so U-Hauls's 26 is really a 24, etc. Call Hertz and Ryder and,
etc. Play the price game with them. Sometimes you can bargain them down.
 2. Why leave from S. Dakota? Find out rates from places within 300 miles
of where your going. When we did our west coast trip, it was 40% cheaper
to rent a truck from Vegas to Chicago than LA to Chicago. We flew to
Vegas (cheaper than flying to LA) got the truck, drove to LA, then back
to Chicago. Saved about $500 and still had enough slop in the mileage
allowance to add the round trip between LA and Vegas.
You need to spend some long distance dollars. Don't call the 800
numbers. Call Information and get phone numbers for the local store. You
can bargain with the local guys sometimes when you can't with their
 national reservation service.
