South Coast Customs, owned by Tim Bight and Sean Hastert in San Clememte, CA, is in the custom golf carts business. You call them with an idea for what you want in a golf cart, they put together options and you choose what you want. We were in the market for a golf cart and decided to have Tim and Sean build us a cart that looked good and performed well. We met up with them on a Saturday to choose our options. For paint we choose a silver base with red stripes on the hood, custom matching upholstery, carbon fiber dash, air horn, better clutch and a few other items.

      Tim and Sean instantly went to work on our cart. They had a 2002 EZ-GO to be used as a base and they began the disassembly immediately. The body was sent to paint, a rear seat was ordered and it, along with the front seat, was sent to the upholsterer. We choose silver and red upholstery to match the paint. We called ITP and ordered a set of their very trick C-Series wheels (with chrome center caps and lug nuts) mounted to a set of Mud-Lite tires. We also ordered a Grant steering wheel and Light ‘Em Up sent an 8’ lighted whip. We had Tim and Sean lift the cart 6” with a beam front end and a leaf spring rear end.

      We needed this cart to be able to climb moderate hills at the dunes, so we needed more torque out of the stock EZ-Go motor. We had them add a stiffer spring in the primary clutch which lets the clutch rev higher before it engages.  In the secondary clutch, we had a Performance Driven Clutch installed which changes the way the transmission "shifts" and gets it to hold a lower "gear" longer, thus allowing engine rpm to increase and therefore deliver more power. The last item we had them add was a shorter drive belt. The advantage to a shorter drive belt is the ability to get and keep RPMs up at low speeds and therefore increase climbing ability. 

      The new golf cart was finished in record time, just under 3 weeks and just in time for Presidents Day weekend at the dunes. When we first saw it we were amazed at how clean it looked! The paint job had 5 coats of clear coat on it which really made it shine! We had them install red tube lights under the cart for a great effect at night. Headlights were not available in our time frame so we used a spot light as a headlight just for this trip. Rad-Lites sent some of there extremely bright LED’s which we used for tail lights. We had an air horn installed under the hood. Turns out the horn is very LOUD and really gets people’s attention. Most of the looks we got were of disbelief as it’s not everyday you hear a loud horn coming from a golf cart.

       AeroMach in Lakeside, CA sent us some very shiny parts for our cart. They sent some chrome side panels with detailed engravings, a very trick shift knob, billet gas and oil caps, a choke knob, and a and a billet choke backing plate. AeroMach makes a wide range of aluminum accessories for Harley Davidson’s and golf carts. Most of their parts are machined out of aluminum then dipped in chrome to ensure a long lasting shine. The addition of their parts topped off our project with style! 

      Overall we are very happy with the way it turned out. We got tons of compliments and really enjoy cruising around in the small dunes! In a future article we will be adding some custom suspension is both the front and the rear for an ultra plush ride, stay tuned!
