Is that old FJ40 gauge
panel giving you trouble? Many FJ40 owners have turned to
aftermarket gauges which get stuck all over the dash board and on the
steering column while the dead gauges just take up space. One cheap
way to correct this is to build your own FJ40 gauge cluster.
I used a 1? thick piece
of particleboard that I had lying around the garage. First I traced
the pattern of the old metal cluster panel onto the wood board. I
then traced the holes from the metal gauge holders (that come with most
aftermarket gauges) in a pattern inside the panel. I then used a
jig-saw to cut the patterns out. Two holes were drilled to match the
bolt holes in the original panel. After checking the fit on my
dashboard, I finished off the new gauge cluster by rounding the edges of
the panel with a belt sander and painting 3 coats of water-resistant spray
paint (we don't want that particle board warping).
You could use any number
of materials, including thick plexiglass, plastic, or even aluminum (if
you have experience with metal working) to form your gauge cluster.
My cluster looks good, and more importantly, was CHEAP.
