Cheap FJ40 Gauge Cluster 2

I saw the gauge cluster article written by Roland Maynard and have replaced the factory gauges and switches on a few of my FJ40's by doing basically the same idea, but with what I feel is a much more elegant look.

  • I ordered a new glove box door (Spector $14.95) to use instead of wood. It is already the exact shape of the factory gauge panel.
  • Remove the glove box door handle and the shift instruction plate.
  • Mark the holes where the 2 factory screws will go into the new gauge panel.
  • Mark the holes where the new gauges will fit (best to use 1 5/8 or smaller gauges).
  • Wire them up and go.

The major benefit is that the factory glove box panel is the EXACT size and shape as the factory gauge panel.  It is a little harder to work with the metal instead of the wood, but it lasts longer and looks much better when completed.

All the switches in my FJ40 have been replaced with aluminum boat-style switches (waterproof).

Just a thought...
