Where are My Sunglasses?Review: Oakley GASCANs

Source: Outdoors at Off-Road.com

A day before leaving to the SCORE Baja 500 I couldn’t find my sunglasses. I had to have sunglasses for the race. There was no way I was heading south of the border and exposing my eyes to direct sunlight and dust. I needed something stylish, comfortable, and of high quality.

I cruised by Alba Action Sports in Poway, CA and walked into their massive showroom. I wasn’t thinking of getting Oakley’s, but there they were—the Oakley GASCANs. These were not the typical Oakley’s I remembered. The GASCANs are awesome! The design is much more in tune with the square look that is in today.

I have also noticed that Oakley has evolved from an 80’s and 90’s Ski and Surf sunglass company. They are now supporting the needs of Off-Road racers like Mark Miller, Ryan Arciero, and Allen Pflueger. So if these hardcore racers are wearing them—they must be good. Heck, then I find out these aren’t the only off-roaders wearing Oakley, Ricky Carmichael and James “Bubba” Stewart also wear them. So I decided to give these new Oakley’s a try.

I had a few pairs of Oakley sunglasses back in the late 90’s, but had moved away from them because the designs were not evolving much from the O-frame. Recently, however, I have noticed a variety of glasses from Oakley that are not only round shaped, but also square or somewhere in between. Their new designs are both sporty and appealing to the eye.

Here are some of the features and benefits of the Oakley GASCAN sunglasses:

• HIGH DEFINITION OPTICS® (HDO®) combines patented optics and PLUTONITE® lens material that provides 100% UV filtering and unsurpassed impact protection.

• Two lenses are cut from the curve of a single lens shield, and then mounted in the frame to maintain the original, continuous contour. The look is so unique; they customized their corporate logo just for this eyewear.

• Lightweight O MATTER® frame material offers premium comfort.

• Peripheral vision is maximized by XYZ OPTICS®, an innovation that maintains visual clarity at all angles of view.

• Impact protection meets ANSI Z87.1 standards, and the Three-Point Fit retains the lenses in precise optical alignment.

• True metal icons sign this Oakley original.

• Prescription Ready.

I have had my Oakley GASCANs for almost 2 months now. So far I am very pleased with the product. They are very light, stylish, and above all—very comfortable. I would recommend our readers to take a look at all the new styles of sunglasses and other products available from Oakley. They are definitely evolving to meet the needs of today’s Off-Road enthusiast.
